SWIFT, the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, has announced plans to launch an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered solution aimed at enhancing fraud detection in cross-border payments. This development is set to commence with a phased rollout beginning in January 2025. The new AI-enhanced tool is a strategic move by SWIFT to bolster the security and efficiency of international financial transactions and mitigate risks associated with financial crime.

SWIFT is a global financial network, pivotal in facilitating secure and standardised messaging services between banks and financial institutions worldwide. It plays a crucial role in enabling cross-border payments, as well as handling trade and securities transactions. The network does not involve the actual movement of money but provides the critical infrastructure required for the secure exchange of financial data. With more than 11,500 banking and securities organisations, market infrastructures, and corporate customers spread across over 200 countries, SWIFT is integral to the global banking ecosystem.

The introduction of this AI-driven fraud detection solution is part of SWIFT's broader strategy to fortify the trust in its global payment network. By leveraging advanced AI and machine learning technologies, the organisation aims to significantly reduce the incidents of financial crime and enhance the overall safety and reliability of international payments. The new tool is designed to analyse vast amounts of real-time payment data to identify and flag suspicious transactions promptly.

The solution has been developed through collaboration with major financial institutions around the world and has undergone successful beta testing earlier this year. It utilises pseudonymised data from billions of transactions within the SWIFT network to ensure the identification of suspicious activities without compromising data privacy.

SWIFT's continuous innovation in financial technology is not confined to AI alone. The network is actively exploring the potential of blockchain technologies and has expressed intentions to develop a new platform for linking multiple central bank digital currencies (CBDC) with the traditional financial system. This exploration into CBDC interoperability began in 2023 and aligns with the organisation’s commitment to adapting to the evolving landscape of global finance.

As SWIFT prepares to introduce this AI-driven enhancement to its services, the move is anticipated to further strengthen the framework of international finance. The developments underscore SWIFT's dedication to maintaining its role as a backbone of international finance, an endeavour it has championed since its inception in the 1970s.
