"The Legend of Ochi" Sparks Buzz Without AI Influence
The forthcoming fantasy adventure film "The Legend of Ochi," produced by the acclaimed A24 studio, has stirred significant online discussion following the release of its first trailer. The film, which introduces audiences to the enchanting creature known as Ochi, has been the subject of speculation regarding the use of generative artificial intelligence in its production—a misconception the film’s creator has actively dispelled.
Isaiah Saxon, the writer and director of the film, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to address rumours that the movie employed AI technology. Saxon emphatically stated that the film relied solely on traditional filmmaking techniques such as animatronics, puppetry, and skilled suit performers to bring Ochi to life. Saxon noted that wider stunt shots incorporated 3D animation, but reaffirmed that “every shot of the Baby Ochi in the trailer is 100 percent animatronic puppet operated by seven people live."
A source affiliated with A24 corroborated Saxon's statements to IndieWire, indicating that the film was indeed handcrafted. Saxon further detailed the painstaking process, highlighting that the film represented six years of intricate work involving puppets, animatronics, over 200 matte paintings—many created by Saxon himself—and selective use of 3D animation, with no AI intervention.
Addressing aesthetic comparisons to Grogu, popularly known as Baby Yoda from “The Mandalorian,” Saxon clarified that the conceptualisation of Ochi began in 2015, well before "The Mandalorian" aired. He affirmed no influence from the series, asserting he had not seen it.
Saxon also commented on the complexity and dedication involved in the film's production. The movie, which was produced on a $10 million budget, was shot in scenic locations across Romania, including the Carpathian Mountains. Saxon, who has previously directed music videos for Björk and Kanye West, brings his extensive experience from co-founding the animation studio Encyclopedia Pictura to the project.
The film marks Saxon’s feature directorial debut and represents an ambitious undertaking with executive producers the Russo Brothers, known for their work on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They back the film under their AGBO label. "The Legend of Ochi" is based on Saxon’s original screenplay, exploring the story of a young girl, played by Helena Zengel, who embarks on a journey to communicate with a mystical animal species known as Ochi. The film also stars Finn Wolfhard, Emily Watson, and Willem Dafoe.
Saxon pairs once more with Dave Longstreth, the Dirty Projectors founder, who will provide the original score for the film. "The Legend of Ochi" presents itself as an “adventure musical” delving into the enigmatic world of animal communication, set against a richly fabricated background.
A24 has slated the release of "The Legend of Ochi" for theatres on February 28, 2025, sparking anticipation among fantasy and adventure genre enthusiasts.
