A recent survey exploring the perceptions of artificial intelligence (AI) among fleet managers across Europe reveals a notable disparity between the views held by those in the UK and their mainland European counterparts. Conducted by Geotab Inc., a prominent player in the field of connected transportation solutions, the study titled “Trusted data insights: what are your vehicles telling you?” sheds light on the hesitancy of UK fleet managers to embrace AI as an effective tool for enhancing data access and deriving actionable insights.

Commissioned in anticipation of the Mobility Connect 2024 event scheduled to take place in Milan on 22 October, the Geotab survey canvassed 400 fleet managers from seven countries—namely the UK, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain. The survey aimed to measure the industry’s current level of maturity in harnessing data and to identify the prevailing challenges and opportunities for improvement.

In the UK, only 33% of fleet managers expressed confidence that AI would improve data accessibility and generate actionable insights. In stark contrast, a substantial 48% of respondents suggested that AI might complicate data analytics and fleet management processes instead of simplifying them.

This cautious attitude diverges significantly from that seen in other European nations. Europe-based fleet managers demonstrated greater trust in AI's potential benefits—64% in France, 60% in Italy, 59% in the Netherlands, 52% in Spain, 51% in Germany, and 43% in Ireland expressed optimism about AI's capability to streamline data access and enhance fleet operations.

In response to these insights, Geotab has introduced Geotab Ace, a Generative AI (GenAI) assistant designed to assist fleet managers in navigating complex data landscapes. Over 100 companies worldwide, including several of Geotab’s partners, have enrolled in a programme intended to assess the utility and refine the features of Geotab Ace based on user feedback.

Early participants employing Geotab Ace have reportedly received data-driven responses to over 1,000 inquiries, addressing key fleet management concerns such as driver risk and safety profiles, vehicle diagnostics, fuel consumption, and overall vehicle utilisation. The GenAI assistant is engineered to process immense volumes of data rapidly, providing insights almost instantaneously. For example, it can swiftly calculate fleet carbon emissions over a specified period using comprehensive data parameters such as fuel type and emission factors.

Edward Kulperger, Senior Vice President at Geotab EMEA, highlighted the importance of embracing sophisticated tools like AI and analytics, emphasising that in the current data-rich environment, leveraging insights stays pivotal for optimising performance, enhancing safety, and meeting sustainability goals. He reiterated the necessity for companies to place their trust in data-driven insights as a critical determinant of business value.

As the sector continues to evolve, especially in addressing operational challenges within mobility, the effective use of advanced data processing technologies such as AI remains a subject of keen interest and varied interpretation among fleet managers across Europe.
