In an era where chatbots are increasingly integrated into daily life, users of AI systems are being reminded to handle their interactions with care, as the details shared might be used to enhance the artificial intelligence that powers them. This caution arises amid the backdrop of AI models being trained on vast datasets, which include information harvested from the internet, such as blog entries, news articles, and social media interactions. While this forms the backbone for these systems to produce coherent responses by predicting the next word in a sentence, it has sparked significant concerns about privacy and consent.
Various tech giants, such as Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, and platforms like Elon Musk's X, operate prominent chatbots that utilise such methodologies. Google's Gemini, for instance, stores user interactions by default for 18 months for anyone aged 18 or older. Human reviewers may analyse these conversations to refine the AI, though users can adjust settings to stop their chats from being recorded. However, if a conversation has been flagged for human review, it remains stored elsewhere. For those wishing to manage this, Google provides an option through its Gemini website to stop the recording of future chats and delete previous ones, albeit with a retention period of 72 hours for service purposes.
Meta, another major player in the AI domain, uses information from social media posts, but not personal messages, to train its AI models embedded in platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram. While users in the European Union and United Kingdom can object to their data being used due to stringent privacy laws, this option is unavailable for users in the United States and other regions lacking similar legal frameworks. Meta does, however, offer a form through their privacy hub for users to request their data not be part of AI training, though this process is noted for its complexity.
Microsoft's Copilot, on the other hand, provides no opt-out option for personal users, although interactions can be deleted via account settings. Conversely, OpenAI’s ChatGPT allows users to disable data usage for model improvement within its settings. Once opted out, the conversations are retained for 30 days solely for abuse monitoring.
Elon Musk's platform, X, formerly known as Twitter, has automatically enabled settings that allow its AI, Grok, to learn from users' social media inputs. Users can opt-out by accessing their desktop settings, but mobile capabilities for this are currently absent.
Finally, Anthropic AI’s Claude offers what some consider a more secure choice; by default, it does not train on personal data and requires explicit user permission through interaction feedback for any data to be used in training.
The manner each of these platforms handles user data and provides options for privacy reflects the growing need for transparent data use policies amid rising privacy concerns. While some companies offer ways to limit or control data usage, the rules are not uniform, posing challenges as varying degrees of privacy regulations impact user autonomy across different regions.
