Worldcoin, the digital identity initiative backed by prominent tech entrepreneur Sam Altman, has rebranded as "World" and has unveiled ambitious plans to significantly expand its user base. The announcement was made during a keynote address on 17th October by Altman and co-founder Alex Blania, signalling a new direction for the project aimed at global expansion.
The rebranding to World reflects a broader mission shift from merely providing identity verification to establishing a more decentralised network. The co-founders shared a series of updates intended to spur global adoption of their identity platform, aiming to grow their user base to 1 billion verified individuals.
Presently, World has 15 million users, with 7 million utilising its biometric Orb technology for verification. The team plans to scale up significantly, integrating technological advancements to facilitate this growth. Blania, who also serves as the CEO of Tools for Humanity, underscored the project's new focus on scalability and decentralisation, indicating that expanding the World Network was a crucial next step.
A major component of this growth strategy is the introduction of a redesigned Orb device. This device verifies users' identity by scanning their irises and is central to World’s efforts to expand its reach globally. The production of these Orbs is set to triple, with plans to introduce the technology in new regions, including flagship sites in Buenos Aires and Mexico City. To enhance accessibility, these biometric verification devices will be placed in public venues, like cafes, with options for on-demand delivery. These changes are projected to be rolled out by spring 2025.
In conjunction with its biometric expansion, World has officially launched World Chain, an Ethereum-secured Layer 2 blockchain. This blockchain is designed to accommodate a vast number of users, marking World Chain as a major player in human verification on the blockchain. With 15 million registrations recorded on its first day, the platform claims to be one of the largest of its kind.
The World App, an integral element of the initiative, is undergoing an update to Version 3.0. This version will enable users to manage their World ID credentials and access additional services such as World Pay, a decentralised payment system, and World Chat, a messaging application. New features, including games and a developed messaging system dubbed World Chat, are expected to engage and attract more users.
Altman, who also spearheads OpenAI, highlighted World's role as an "anonymous human layer for the internet." He emphasised the relevance of secure human identity verification in an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence. As AI continues to proliferate, distinguishing human users from AI entities becomes increasingly important, making World's verification system a potentially critical tool for the future.
Overall, the rebranding from Worldcoin to World, coupled with its strategic expansions, reflects the project's intent to play a significant role in digital identity verification on a global scale.
