A landmark initiative in Barbados is setting a new standard for agricultural innovation, as the island's smallholder farms embrace advanced AI technology to enhance productivity and stability amidst economic and climatic pressures. The pioneering effort is spearheaded by AGRIVI, a London-based enterprise specialising in farm management software, and aims to empower local farmers with an AI advisor designed to deliver personalised and timely agricultural guidance.

Founded in 2013, AGRIVI has developed its AI Advisor to assist farmers by offering crucial insights into agronomic practices, market trends, financing opportunities, and other vital areas. The company's strategic alliance with the Barbados Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (BADMC) will facilitate the rollout of this technology to farmers throughout Barbados via WhatsApp, ensuring seamless interaction between the island's government and its agricultural sector.

The partnership builds on a pre-existing relationship between AGRIVI and BADMC aimed at enhancing sugarcane production—a staple of the Barbadian economy. Building on the successful precedent, the introduction of the AI advisor was perceived as an opportunity to extend outreach and furnish farmers with essential knowledge regarding best practices, subsidies, and farming support nationwide.

AGRIVI's CEO, Matija Zulj, highlights a key challenge faced by small-scale farmers: the struggle to integrate advanced technology into their operations. The AI Advisor seeks to address this by delivering its services through WhatsApp, a familiar platform to users globally, thus eliminating the need for farmers to acquire new digital skills. Zulj explains, “For countries like Barbados with predominantly small farms that are not digitalised, finding ways to support their farms to improve their productivity and sustainability is a major issue.”

The AI advisor not only provides agronomy advice but also disseminates information about financial and governmental support, enabling farmers to make well-informed decisions. Additionally, it supports data collection for compliance and sustainability initiatives, bolstering productivity while helping to meet industry standards. Zulj notes that this strengthens the supply chain for key commodity producers, thereby benefiting the broader agricultural ecosystem.

This initiative is part of AGRIVI's ambitious mission to democratise access to top-tier technology across both large-scale and smallholder farms. The company envisions a future where expert agricultural knowledge is readily available through partnerships with governments and enterprises, without cost to the farmers. Zulj expresses confidence in the broader applicability of this model, anticipating similar AI-driven agricultural support systems soon to be adopted in regions such as Europe, Latin America, and Asia.
