Financial institutions worldwide continue to prioritise artificial intelligence (AI) in their strategic planning, according to a recent study by SIX, a renowned Swiss financial market infrastructure group. Released on 21st October, the research highlights that AI technology remains at the forefront of financial executives' strategic objectives for the second year running.

The survey of 293 C-suite executives revealed that 41% intend to concentrate on the integration of AI within their operations over the next three years. This focus comes as AI technology, especially following the impactful introduction of ChatGPT, opens up a spectrum of possibilities for enhancing efficiency and innovation in the financial sector. Executives are particularly interested in harnessing AI to streamline operations and manage vast datasets more effectively.

A significant portion of respondents (40%) believe that leveraging AI for automated compliance and regulatory reporting could offer substantial value to their clients. This reflects a growing trend towards using AI to minimise administrative burdens and improve the accuracy and efficiency of regulatory processes. In an industry where the ability to quickly and accurately manage large volumes of data is crucial, AI presents as a valuable tool to meet these challenges.

The report also indicates a strong interest in cloud technology and data analytics, with 38% of senior leaders recognising these as critical areas for future development. The adoption of cloud infrastructure is seen as essential for modernising financial institutions' technology stacks, while data analytics continues to play a vital role in capturing value through enhanced insights and decision-making capabilities.

Dave Brupbacher, SIX’s Head of IT, expressed optimism about the findings. He noted that as AI becomes more integrated into financial services, institutions would increasingly depend on financial market infrastructures to supply innovative solutions, thereby boosting operational efficiency and enhancing decision-making and risk management processes.

SIX's Future of Finance report, in which these results are detailed, provides an annual evaluation of trends and sentiment within the financial industry. It is viewed as an important indicator of how the sector is evolving and the technological advancements that are most likely to shape its future. This year’s findings underscore a clear trajectory towards AI and related technologies as cornerstones of strategy for financial executives globally.
