In a significant boost to the nuclear energy sector, shares in several nuclear energy companies reached record highs this week following landmark power supply agreements with tech giants Amazon and Google. These deals are set to advance the deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs) in the United States, a move seen as pivotal for the burgeoning demand for low-carbon electricity to power data centres.
US-listed SMR developers Oklo Inc and NuScale Power experienced notable surges in their share prices, climbing by 99% and 37% respectively. This followed announcements from private SMR developers X-energy and Kairos Power regarding their financing agreements with Amazon and Google. Other companies in the nuclear sector, such as Cameco, Constellation, and BWX Technologies, also saw their shares trading at record levels.
The agreements underpin plans to build up to a dozen next-generation reactors. These reactors aim to deliver sustainable and reliable electricity to meet the needs of energy-intensive artificial intelligence data centres operated by Amazon and Google. The demand for data centres, which has been increasing, poses a challenge to efforts to decrease dependency on fossil fuels and drive decarbonisation.
Constellation Energy Group, which operates the largest fleet of traditional reactors in the US, has demonstrated significant growth with its shares doubling since the start of 2023. Recently, Constellation inked a 20-year power supply deal with Microsoft, resulting in plans to reopen the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania, known for the most serious nuclear accident in US history due to a partial reactor meltdown.
Meanwhile, uranium producer Cameco saw its shares rise by 38% this year, while BWX Technologies, a supplier of nuclear components, enjoyed a 65% surge in stock value.
Industry experts highlighted how the moves by Amazon and Google are indicative of a broader nuclear renaissance, with many viewing these ambitious ventures as a critical response to the power demands posed by AI technologies. Seth Grae, chief executive of Lightbridge Corporation and chair of the American Nuclear Society’s International Council, noted the tech industry's belief that nuclear power, rather than solely renewables and batteries, is essential for stable and cost-efficient electricity supply.
Despite this positive momentum, the nuclear industry faces challenges. Concerns linger about the history of delays and cost overruns with new nuclear projects, along with regulatory hurdles. Small modular reactors are promoted as smaller, safer, and more efficient than their larger counterparts, yet investor caution has been prevalent due to difficulties in timely and budget-conscious project completion.
X-energy and Kairos Power's projects, although ambitious, are seen as experimental, with potential deployment timelines extending beyond the currently projected 2030 targets. Additionally, market conditions have proven difficult; last year, X-energy had to cancel a significant public offering due to these challenges, and NuScale faced setbacks when utilities withdrew interest following price hikes.
Prominent figures within the industry, such as Marc Bianchi, an analyst at TD Cowen, acknowledge the reluctance among potential customers to engage with initial reactor units, which entail greater financial risks. Nevertheless, the involvement of tech behemoths is heralded as a transformative factor, as underscored by Clayton Scott, NuScale’s chief commercial officer, who expressed optimism about the tech sector's endorsement of nuclear options.
The path forward for the nuclear energy sector remains uncertain, with some expressing caution over the untested nature of current SMR designs and the protracted timelines associated with their deployment. The nuclear landscape is further complicated by the competitive advancements of other energy sectors, particularly renewables, which currently dominate pending grid connectivity projects.
While challenges persist, the backing of major technology firms could mark a new chapter for nuclear energy in the United States, reflecting a strategic shift amid growing climate considerations and the quest to power the next wave of technological innovation with sustainable solutions.
