Oriole Networks, a pioneering company at the forefront of utilising photonics for artificial intelligence (AI), has successfully raised $22 million in its latest funding round. This substantial financial boost was led by the London-based venture firm Plural, with all existing contributors, including UCL Technology Fund, XTX Ventures, Clean Growth Fund, and Dorilton Ventures, reinvesting in the burgeoning startup. This latest influx in capital brings Oriole's total fundraising for the year to $35 million.
Founded in 2023, Oriole Networks was born out of University College London and is driven by the innovative use of light to create networks of AI chips. This cutting-edge approach, which employs advanced photonics technology, enables large language models (LLMs) to be trained up to 100 times faster than conventional methods, while significantly reducing energy consumption. This development is particularly notable as the AI sector grapples with the energy-intensive demands of data centres, which are pivotal in the training and operation of LLMs.
The photonics-based solution proposed by Oriole Networks addresses key challenges in AI, such as speed, latency, and sustainability. Through its innovative approach, the firm aims to alleviate the growing strain that data centres place on energy infrastructures across the US and Europe. If data centre demand continues to rise as projected—potentially tripling by 2035—the impact on energy resources could be significant, especially if renewable energy solutions like wind and solar do not keep pace with demand.
At the helm of Oriole Networks is CEO James Regan, known for his previous work with EFFECT Photonics. He has assembled a team of experienced professionals from the photonics industry, including experts from Lumentum, to help commercialise the unique intellectual property developed by foundational scientists Professor George Zervas, Alessandro Ottino, and Joshua Benjamin over the past two decades at UCL. As the company moves into a critical scaling phase, Ian Hogarth from Plural has joined Oriole’s board to assist and support the team.
The photonics sector is experiencing a surge of interest, with other companies such as Lightmatter and Xscape Photonics also securing significant investments for their unique approaches to employing light in AI data centres. These ventures are seeking to resolve the significant energy and time limitations imposed by current AI infrastructure that relies on conventional electronic networks.
Oriole Networks proposes a comprehensive vision that connects every AI chip in a supercomputing cluster using photonics, potentially reducing training times for the largest AI models by up to a hundredfold while cutting energy usage drastically. This approach not only tackles current technological bottlenecks but also aims to significantly lessen the environmental impact of running large-scale AI operations.
The company’s immediate strategy involves accelerating the development of its photonic technology with the fresh capital, expanding its team, and engaging high-volume suppliers, with plans to introduce initial products to customers by 2025. Discussions are already underway with major cloud service providers and semiconductor manufacturers about potential collaborations and equipment testing.
Ian Hogarth, alongside his role at Plural, brings a wealth of expertise to Oriole Networks. He has previously led the UK government's AI taskforce and chairs the AI Safety Institute. His investment philosophy aligns closely with Oriole’s objectives, seeking solutions that offer systemic changes rather than incremental improvements to AI infrastructure.
