In an ambitious new initiative, Chainlink has successfully brought together leading financial and market infrastructure entities such as Euroclear and Swift, alongside some of the world's largest financial institutions, including UBS, Franklin Templeton, Wellington Management, CACEIS, Vontobel, and Sygnum Bank. This collaboration leverages advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), oracles, and blockchain technology to address longstanding challenges in the management of corporate actions data, offering a promising solution to the financial industry.
Unveiled on 21 October 2024, in San Francisco, the initiative marks a significant breakthrough in the standardisation and real-time distribution of corporate actions data. By utilising Chainlink's decentralized oracles and large language models, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT 4o, Google's Gemini 1.5 pro, and Anthropic's Claude 3.5 sonnet, the project aims to validate and deliver crucial financial data onchain. This system significantly reduces the reliance on manual data revalidation, a process currently rife with inefficiencies, costing financial intermediaries approximately $3-5 million annually.
The current state of corporate actions processing is fraught with inconsistencies in terms of structure, format, and data standards, leading to costly manual checks and revalidation. With this initiative, Chainlink proposes a unified 'golden record' available in real-time, significantly cutting down on workload and errors while syncing all participants, from custodians to asset managers, at a much faster pace and reduced cost.
This endeavour also boasts the collaboration of three blockchain ecosystem partners: Hyperledger Besu, Avalanche, and ZKsync. Together, they demonstrated how Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) could securely transport validated corporate actions data across multiple blockchain platforms. By creating an interoperable, unified golden record, the initiative reflects a considerable architectural achievement that could transform how corporate actions data is managed and transferred.
Key figures in the financial industry have expressed their enthusiasm for this advancement. Sergey Nazarov, Co-Founder of Chainlink, highlighted the initiative's potential for converting disparate corporate actions data into single, reliable sources of truth. He underscored the benefits of reducing costly errors and synchronising financial markets swiftly and efficiently.
Stéphanie Lheureux of Euroclear underscored the importance of industry collaboration alongside cutting-edge technologies in addressing workflow inefficiencies, advocating the creation of transformative solutions. Meanwhile, Mark Garabedian from Wellington Management emphasized the significant potential for operational efficiency and cost reduction through the integration of AI and Chainlink oracles.
The initiative lays the groundwork for future applications of unified golden records beyond corporate actions, suggesting potential use cases in asset valuation, risk management, and more. Moving forward, the initiative plans to integrate Swift messaging standards to enhance the compatibility of onchain golden records with existing portfolio processing systems.
Chainlink, known for enabling financial institutions to develop bespoke blockchain applications, has previously secured over $16 trillion in transaction value across the blockchain ecosystem. This initiative is poised to further solidify its impact by demonstrating enhanced data management capabilities across global financial markets.
