xAI, the artificial intelligence company spearheaded by Elon Musk, has launched an API for its flagship generative AI model, Grok. Announced in August, the release of the API was anticipated as a means to make Grok more accessible and utilitarian. However, its current iteration seems rather basic, offering only a single model—dubbed "grok-beta."
The pricing structure for the API is set at $5 per million input tokens, which approximate to around 750,000 words, and $15 per million output tokens. Tokens are essentially subdivisions of raw data and can be likened to syllables in words. Despite the release, it remains ambiguous if "grok-beta" represents the latest iteration, Grok 2, which is referenced alongside another model, Grok mini, in API documentation. Users reported having issues with purchasing usage credits, which suggests teething problems in the early stages of the API rollout.
A notable feature of the xAI API is its support for function calling, enabling Grok models to interface with external resources such as databases and search engines. Moreover, documentation hints at the potential for vision models that could interpret both text and images, though these functionalities are not yet active.
xAI was established by Musk last year, marking his foray into the competitive landscape of generative AI. The company has made its mark by releasing the first Grok model to X Premium+ users, who subscribe at $16 per month. Musk has described Grok as having a "rebellious streak," unafraid to tackle controversial queries, a trait that distinguishes it from its peers like ChatGPT.
Grok has been weaved into the X platform, extending its capabilities to generate images through an integration with Flux, an open image generator. This integration notably lacks traditional content moderation safeguards. Besides image generation, Grok is involved in summarising news and trending topics, albeit with occasional inaccuracies, and may eventually enhance various features on X such as search functionality and analytics.
The introduction of the API signifies xAI’s effort to keep pace with prominent competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic. With an impressive $6 billion raised in funding from high-profile investors, including Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital, xAI is equipped with substantial resources. Musk believes that the vast repository of data available through X provides xAI with a distinct advantage in developing advanced AI models.
As part of this initiative, X amended its privacy policy to permit xAI and other third parties to train models on its posts. Musk’s broader vision for xAI involves leveraging data from his other ventures, such as Tesla and SpaceX, to enhance technologies across these companies. However, this strategic direction has not been without controversy, facing legal pushback from Tesla shareholders who allege a conflict of interest in Musk’s dual commitments.
The development of Grok’s future iterations is currently underway at xAI’s Memphis data centre. This facility has become the subject of environmental scrutiny due to accusations of contributing to local air pollution with unregulated turbines. xAI plans to upgrade its infrastructure but will need regulatory approval from the Tennessee Valley Authority to proceed.
Despite its nascent state, xAI’s API represents a pivotal moment in the company’s growth, as Musk navigates both operational challenges and strategic aspirations in the expanding universe of artificial intelligence.
