Sotheby's is preparing to enter uncharted territory later this month with its inaugural auction of an artwork conceived by a humanoid robot. The piece in question is "AI God," a portrait of Alan Turing, crafted by Ai-Da, an advanced humanoid robot artist. This event is scheduled as part of Sotheby’s "digital art day," taking place on October 31, at which the groundbreaking artwork will be a headline feature.
"AI God," the painting up for auction, is a mixed-media creation measuring 64 by 90.5 inches. Designed and executed by Ai-Da in 2024, the painting is a tribute to Alan Turing, who is venerated as a pivotal figure in the development of modern computing and whose theories laid the groundwork for artificial intelligence. Ai-Da’s work is estimated by Sotheby’s to potentially garner between $120,000 and $180,000.
Ai-Da, the robot artist, is the brainchild of Aidan Meller, a prominent UK art dealer and gallery owner. The robot’s artistic capabilities are powered by a combination of cameras installed in her eyes, sophisticated AI algorithms, and a robotic arm, enabling her to draw and paint autonomously. Meller highlights that Ai-Da’s creations differ notably from other AI-generated artworks due to her ability to produce physical manifestations of art, a first for robots of her type in auction settings.
Aidan Meller expressed the importance of this auction as a marker for AI's evolution in society. "There is a significant amount of innovation happening, and a vast number of robots are now emerging with the capability to undertake diverse tasks. Art, as a medium, is instrumental in discussing the transformative changes induced by technology," Meller explained. He also mentioned that proceeds from the auction will be channelled back to support the ongoing costs of the Ai-Da project.
The upcoming sale of Ai-Da's portrait coincides with a growing collection of revolutionary works that challenge contemporary perceptions of artistic creation, according to Michael Bouhanna, Sotheby’s Head of NFT and digital art. Bouhanna remarked that these works collectively encourage discourse on how art-making can be appreciated amid the rapidly changing technological landscape of the 21st century.
Despite the forward-thinking nature of Ai-Da’s artwork, the event highlights a challenge within the art market landscape: valuing AI-generated works presents distinct difficulties compared to assessing those by human artists, due to the novel attributes and integration of technology in their creation. As the art world continues to grapple with these challenges, Ai-Da's auction represents a significant moment for both artificial intelligence and artistic expression.
