Dunia Innovations has successfully raised $11.5 million in a funding round aimed at revolutionising the field of materials science through the application of AI-driven laboratory processes. The funding round was co-led by prominent investment firms Elaia and redalpine, with additional backing from the European Innovation Council (EIC), Pace Ventures, Kindred Capital, Deep Science Ventures, Anglo American, and a contingent of knowledgeable industry angels.
Established in 2022, Dunia Innovations seeks to radically change the materials discovery process. The company's innovative approach integrates advanced artificial intelligence algorithms with a pioneering self-driving lab, designed to significantly accelerate the discovery of new advanced materials. Dunia has carved out a niche focus on power-to-x electrocatalysts, which are essential in producing green hydrogen and ammonia, as well as in transforming carbon dioxide into more complex chemical products. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to address the energy transition from petrochemical dependency towards a future of low-carbon fuels and chemicals.
Michael Sidler, Founding Partner at redalpine, emphasised the importance of the technology, stating, "With humanity's fast-growing need for power and the reliance on petrochemicals, the discovery of novel ways to create sustainable fuels and chemicals has become crucial." Dunia’s approach proposes a disruption in traditional research and development processes, which are currently slow and protracted, to create novel catalysing agents for efficient fuel synthesis.
The importance of catalysts cannot be understated, as they are central to 90% of today's chemical processes and are pivotal in advancing energy transition goals. With the global market for electrochemical technologies projected to reach an estimated 1.5 trillion dollars by 2050, Dunia's technological advancements offer not only potentially significant environmental benefits but also a substantial commercial opportunity. By reducing the innovation cycle from several decades to less than three years, Dunia aims to leverage this expansive market potential.
Dr. Alexander Hammer, Co-Founder of Dunia, explained the methodology: "You can't solve this problem with software alone but by combining machine learning with chemical robotics, we can iterate faster and generate high-quality data, drastically cutting down the time needed to discover new materials." Dunia’s method diverges from the traditional "design, make, test, analyze" cycle by employing advanced robotic workflows and quantum chemistry-derived material representations, enhancing their machine learning systems beyond conventional black-box approaches.
Professor Lee Cronin, Regius Chair of Chemistry and Founder of Chemify, acknowledged the current readiness of technology for such innovation: "Dunia is stepping in at the perfect time to capitalize on recent advances in scientific AI and chemical robotics as these tools have finally matured."
This ambitious initiative has been reinforced by grants from the IBB and the EIC Accelerator, alongside commendations from the NZTC’s TechX Clean Energy Accelerator, Henry Royce Institute, and RMI's Third Derivative Accelerator.
Chris Gibson, CEO of Recursion, endorsed Dunia's approach: "Dunia is taking the same bold approach to clean energy materials that we’ve taken at Recursion in biotech—applying AI and automation to transform a traditionally slow-moving industry."
Dr. Udo Jung, a senior advisor and partner emeritus at BCG, highlighted Dunia’s potential impact, noting the strategic selection of electrochemical materials as a leverage point for companies aiming to pursue sustainable solutions without sacrificing profitability.
The founding team of Dunia comprises experts in chemistry, machine learning, and robotics, supported by a notable board of advisors. These include Dr Udo Jung, Dr Chris Gibson, Professor Lee Cronin, and Dr Carlos Haertel, a former executive at GE, who will serve as the Chairman of the board. This team has already demonstrated their platform’s capability, having successfully validated their technology in accelerated electrocatalyst ink formulation, outperforming traditional human research standards in both speed and efficiency.
