Genie AI, a legal technology startup, has successfully raised $17.8 million in a Series A funding round supported by Google Ventures and Khosla Ventures. Founded in 2017, the London-based company aims to revolutionise the legal industry with its innovative AI-powered platform designed to streamline the contract drafting process.
Genie AI’s platform serves as an advanced legal assistant, capable of drafting and reviewing legal documents with remarkable speed. Its key feature is an AI editing tool that allows users to create tailored agreements applicable across various global jurisdictions. In addition to drafting documents, the tool offers an extensive open-source library containing templates for contracts, policies, and letters of intent. According to Rafie Faruq, cofounder and CEO of Genie AI, this capability addresses a common challenge faced by lawyers: being overworked and understaffed. "Our software allows them to turn around a contract in minutes," he explained.
The efficiency provided by Genie AI’s platform offers significant potential cost reductions for businesses by accelerating the contract turnaround time and facilitating quicker deal closures. The startup operates on a revenue model based on an annual subscription fee tied to platform usage. Presently, it serves over 26,000 companies, showcasing its widespread adoption and appeal within the legal sector.
Genie AI stands out from its competitors by introducing a freemium model with an open platform. Unlike many rivals relying heavily on Microsoft Word, Genie AI has developed a proprietary AI-enabled editor that emphasizes privacy. This unique position underlines its commitment to delivering true value in the legal industry, as evidenced by Faruq's remarks on challenging the traditional billable hour framework that prevails in legal practices.
The notable backing from Google Ventures, a venture capital arm of the tech giant, and Khosla Ventures highlights the growing interest in legal tech, a field experiencing increased investor focus. Other notable startups in the sector, such as Robin AI, Leya, and Harvey, have recently attracted significant attention and funding.
This financial boost brings Genie AI’s total funding to approximately $20 million and sets the stage for its expansion into the U.S. market. Additionally, the company plans to innovate further by enhancing its agentic AI capabilities—systems exhibiting a degree of autonomy and requiring minimal input to function efficiently. This focus aligns with an emerging trend within the AI ecosystem drawing considerable investor interest.
Furthermore, Genie AI intends to double efforts on its proprietary editor, enhancing legal-specific editing workflows to better serve its user base. These planned developments position Genie AI to continue making a substantial impact in the legal technology sphere.
