Düsseldorf, Germany — The global glass, glazing, and machinery industry gathered in force as glasstec 2024 commenced its international trade show on Tuesday at Messe Düsseldorf in Düsseldorf, Germany. Central themes for this year's event include decarbonization, circularity, and digitalization, with the trade show captivating attendees from around the globe.
Lars Wismer, director of glasstec, had previously set the stage for the September event by outlining the cutting-edge innovations expected. He emphasised the pivotal role of modern, automated production solutions that feature robotic systems and intelligent control platforms. Crucial to these advancements is the integration of artificial intelligence, a key factor in cost-saving measures and decarbonization efforts.
Technological Advancements on Display
Prominent companies showcased their solutions, aligning closely with the event's themes. A+W Software, recognised for its commitment to simplifying problem-solving through technology, presented various services, including Smart Companion, Glass Lab, and iShape. Chris Kammer, A+W Software North America's marketing lead, expressed enthusiasm for the educational exchange offered by the event. The company aims to assist midsized companies transitioning from traditional Excel spreadsheets to sophisticated software systems. Their Glass Lab initiative features a visual simulation of glass fabrication processes, using video game graphics to demonstrate the enhancements software can bring to production management.
Sebastian Dick, manager of A+W Clarity, elaborated on this venture, expressing aspirations to create a digital twin of each customer's shop floor layout by late 2026, enabling detailed simulations of enhanced operational processes.
Innovations in Materials and Energy Efficiency
Koja Group brought attention to its sustainable solutions with the introduction of carbon fibre quench fans. Operating in Finland, Sweden, and the United States, the company exhibited propellers developed to improve energy savings and safety. David Mais, sales director of industrial solutions, highlighted the significant energy cost reductions — up to 25% monthly — and safety benefits of carbon fibre over traditional steel. The market for these innovations has notably expanded in the U.S., driven by rising energy costs and rebates.
Anssi Alatalo, project director of industrial solutions, noted that interest in their carbon fibre solution has surged particularly in the U.S., where energy savings and economic incentives have fueled adoption.
New Developments in Membranes and Fire Safety
Sika utilised glasstec as a platform to highlight its SikaMembran series, alongside fire-rated products and a revolutionary façade system in conjunction with Schuco. Dr. Ana Vallejo Vitaller, Sika's market field manager for façade and fenestration, introduced an EPDM film membrane that boasts a lighter weight and reduced carbon footprint due to its innovative production and transport efficiencies.
Furthermore, Sika has embarked on a new venture into fire-rated products. According to Vitaller, the fire-resistant materials expand upon exposure to fire, effectively sealing cavities to provide crucial time for evacuation and response in emergency situations.
