OpenAI and Microsoft have announced a financial initiative aimed at integrating artificial intelligence technology within the newsroom, with a significant investment directed towards major US media outlets. The collaboration between the tech giants and the Lenfest Institute of Journalism will see up to $10 million allocated to five prominent publications: Chicago Public Media, the Minnesota Star Tribune, Newsday in Long Island, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and The Seattle Times. The funding will be used to foster the engagement of AI tools within these organisations, with an emphasis on enhancing technological capabilities and business sustainability.
As part of the initiative, each participating publication will appoint an AI fellow for a period of two years. These fellows will be tasked with spearheading projects that aim to integrate AI technology in ways that are beneficial and innovative for the journalistic process. Future plans include awarding additional grants, with three more news outlets expected to receive similar support in a forthcoming second round.
The financial commitment by OpenAI and Microsoft involves both direct funding and software support. Each company will contribute $2.5 million in direct funding, complemented by $2.5 million in software and enterprise credits, ensuring these newsrooms have access to advanced technological resources to aid in their respective initiatives.
This move to integrate AI comes amidst a complex backdrop of legal and ethical challenges involving AI's role in journalism. In recent times, OpenAI and Microsoft have faced lawsuits from several media entities, including the Center for Investigative Reporting, The New York Times, and others. These legal actions have raised concerns over issues such as plagiarism and the unauthorised use of content to train AI models. Despite these challenges, some media companies have opted to negotiate partnerships for content usage, as demonstrated by Condé Nast's recent agreement with OpenAI.
The project underscores the ongoing evolution and digital transformation within the media sector, reflecting a trend towards embracing technological advancements despite the accompanying controversies. Through the support of AI technology, these publications hope to explore innovative approaches to journalism, improve operational efficiency, and secure financial sustainability in an increasingly digital landscape.
