Susan Davenport Appointed Chief Data and Artificial Intelligence Officer for Department of the Air Force
The Department of the Air Force has announced the appointment of Susan Davenport as its new Chief Data and Artificial Intelligence Officer (CDAO), a strategic role crucial for the progress of AI and data initiatives across the Air Force and Space Force. This announcement was made by the department's Chief Information Office on Tuesday, highlighting Davenport's significant experience and qualifications for the position.
Susan Davenport succeeds Chandra Donelson, who served as the acting CDAO since April while also fulfilling her duties as the Space Force’s data and AI officer. Previously, the role was held by Eileen Vidrine, who served from January 2023 until her retirement in March of the same year.
The Air Force's CIO praised Davenport's profound expertise in driving innovation and managing complex projects, indicating that her leadership will be central to advancing data and AI capabilities within the military branches she will oversee. With over 30 years of government service under her belt, Davenport has previously held significant positions at agencies like the National Reconnaissance Office and the Air Force. Her most recent position was as a senior advisor for defence innovation in the Secretary of the Air Force’s office for concepts development and management.
Davenport's responsibilities as CDAO include ensuring that the Department of the Air Force is prepared to be “AI-ready” by 2025 and achieving "AI-competitive" status by 2027. Her role will also involve promoting the ethical use of artificial intelligence and related technologies within the military framework. Specifically, she will have the task of developing and implementing strategies for enterprise data management, analytics, and digital transformation aimed at enhancing the department’s performance initiatives.
The Department of Defense, alongside its various military service branches, is focusing on leveraging AI for a multitude of functions, ranging from routine tasks to more complex tactical operations. These efforts include equipping personnel with new AI-enabled tools for experimentation through platforms like the DAF AI Launch Point and the AI Exchange App Store.
A notable tool among these initiatives is NIPRGPT, a generative AI chatbot launched in June. This project is hosted on the Non-classified Internet Protocol Router Network (NIPRNet) and was developed in collaboration with the Air Force Research Laboratory. It serves as an experimental platform allowing officials to test large language models and evaluate their applicability in real-world scenarios.
Davenport’s appointment as CDAO represents a crucial step in maintaining the Department of the Air Force’s momentum in adopting advanced AI and data-driven technologies, solidifying its competitive edge and maintaining operational effectiveness.
