Thomson Reuters, a global leader in professional information and technology solutions, has significantly expanded its capabilities in artificial intelligence with the acquisition of Materia, a firm specialising in AI technology for tax and accounting. This acquisition underscores Thomson Reuters' strategic initiative to integrate cutting-edge AI solutions into its suite of offerings for tax, audit, and accounting professionals.
Materia is known for its advanced platform that simplifies complex accounting queries into plain language responses, while also embedding citations for verification purposes. This innovative platform doubles as a document workspace that includes features such as analysis templates that are shareable among team members, thus allowing for more streamlined and standardised operations. Additionally, Materia’s platform is capable of being personalised with a firm’s guidance, policies, client documents, contracts, and engagement files, thereby creating bespoke templates tailored to specific business needs. It also boasts a dedicated search engine for accessing authoritative tax and accounting sources like the SEC, IRS, and FASB, supplemented with a comprehensive document library and integrated tools.
An integral component of Materia’s platform is its robust accounting engine, which is designed to manage large-scale accounting workflows, including multistage planning and comprehensive template running capabilities. This functionality is expected to significantly enhance operational efficiency for users.
David Wong, Chief Product Officer at Thomson Reuters, expressed optimism regarding the integration of Materia into the company's offerings. Wong stated, "Our vision is to provide each professional we serve with a Gen AI assistant. Materia will further accelerate this vision for our tax, audit and accounting customers. Once fully integrated, Materia will transform work and unify the entire customer experience with applications across our tax, audit and accounting portfolio."
The acquisition of Materia follows a successful proof-of-concept initiative led by Thomson Reuters Ventures, which allowed selected users of Checkpoint Edge to interact with certain Checkpoint content through Materia’s AI assistant. The results of this initiative highlighted the potential of combining Materia's AI capabilities with Thomson Reuters’ existing content and expertise to deliver enhanced value to their clients.
This strategic move is part of a broader trend at Thomson Reuters to integrate AI into its services. Earlier in the year, the company launched a new AI-powered auditing solution known as Audit Intelligence Analyse. This tool is designed to segment audit testing populations, detect anomalies, and generate necessary documentation — marking the first in a series of AI solutions within the planned Audit Intelligence suite. Prior to this, Thomson Reuters introduced Checkpoint Edge, a platform with an AI-assisted research feature.
Through these initiatives, Thomson Reuters aims to refine and elevate the customer experience for professionals in the tax, audit, and accounting sectors, solidifying its position at the forefront of AI-powered professional services.
