AI Integration Gains Momentum Across Industries Amidst Mixed Public Perception and Booming Semiconductor Market

Global Business Adoption of AI

A significant majority of businesses worldwide are integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into their operations, with a McKinsey study in May 2024 revealing that 72% of organisations have adopted AI in at least one function. While these businesses recognise the benefits of AI, they also express concern over potential risks. Inaccuracy is viewed as the most substantial threat by 63% of these organisations, followed by fears around intellectual property infringement (52%) and cybersecurity issues (51%).

Public Concerns Over AI in the US

Despite the surge in organisational adoption, public opinion in the United States reflects a more cautious stance towards AI. According to a 2023 survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, a majority of US consumers (52%) express more concern than excitement about AI technology. 36% hold a balanced view, feeling equally concerned and excited, while a mere 10% express more excitement than concern. A significant proportion, 60%, reports discomfort with AI's use in healthcare.

Further, an AAA survey from March 2024 highlights that 66% of Americans harbour fears about self-driving cars, with only 9% willing to trust them.

AI's Upward Trajectory in the Semiconductor Industry

Amidst these mixed perceptions, the impact of AI on the semiconductor industry is substantial and growing. Gartner's May 2024 report estimates that worldwide AI integrated circuit (IC) revenue will soar from $54 billion in 2023 to $92 billion in 2025. Market forecasts project the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for AI ICs over the coming years between 20% and 41%.

NVIDIA leads the AI IC market with remarkable growth. The company's Data Center division, a significant segment of its AI operations, saw its revenue skyrocket from $15 billion in fiscal year 2023 to $48 billion in fiscal 2024, and projections suggest it will exceed $100 billion in fiscal 2025. NVIDIA's AI ICs, which include cutting-edge graphics processors, are anticipated to generate around $96 billion in revenue for the company in 2024.

Other tech giants like AMD and Intel are also making strides, with AMD projecting $4.5 billion in AI IC revenue for 2024, and Intel estimating $500 million. Meanwhile, a range of other companies, from cloud service providers like AWS and Alphabet to mobile IC producers such as Apple and Samsung, are entering the burgeoning AI IC market.

Future Market Projections and Challenges

In 2024, the global AI IC market is estimated at $110 billion, making up 18% of the projected total semiconductor market. NVIDIA’s dominance is especially pronounced, with an estimated 87% market share. Looking ahead, AI ICs are forecast to become a significant segment of the semiconductor industry, potentially accounting for nearly a third of the market by 2029 if the projected growth rates hold steady. However, the expansion of AI ICs is expected to partly replace existing processors across various sectors, from data centres to consumer electronics and automotive industries.

As AI continues to revolutionise industries, its integration into the semiconductor market not only reflects technological advancements but also signals a shift towards more AI-centric solutions across global business practices. While the technological community focuses on innovation and capacity building, broader societal conversations remain essential to address public concerns around AI deployment and its implications.
