In light of rising food prices, technology-savvy shoppers are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to help manage their grocery bills. A report by Nerdwallet highlights a significant 28% increase in food costs since 2019, driven by higher production expenses and supply chain disruptions. As consumers seek innovative ways to navigate these challenges, AI emerges as a promising tool for creating budget-friendly, personalised meal plans without necessitating a visit to the store.
Based in Washington D.C., Omar Kouhlani, CEO of Runmic Inc., highlights two key areas where AI can facilitate savings: adaptive meal planning and tracking grocery discounts. Kouhlani emphasises the effectiveness of AI services like ChatGPT in optimising meal plans according to available discounts. By simply uploading grocery store flyers or advertisements, consumers can receive tailored meal suggestions that align with available promotions and discounts, potentially leading to substantial savings.
For those looking for interactive grocery management, Kouhlani suggests using user-friendly apps like Yummly and Mealime for meal planning, while apps such as Flipp and Ibotta specialise in identifying lucrative grocery discounts.
Kouhlani provides examples of AI prompts that could be beneficial for consumers. For meal planning, a prompt could be: "Suggest 5 recipes incorporating these coupons that are also budget-friendly based on current prices at my local market," followed by attaching store flyers. For tracking discounts, a prompt might be: "Search online for the latest grocery discounts and promotions from [Store]. We are a family of four and my daughter is lactose intolerant."
Furthermore, grocery giants are taking steps to integrate new technologies in store operations. Mark Bruce, Corporate Affairs Manager for Kroger's Columbus division, conveyed that the company is experimenting with electronic labels as a substitute for traditional paper labels. This shift to digital could streamline pricing updates and ensure customers have access to the most current deals. "Anything in that realm would be used to bring the lowest price to our customers," Bruce stated.
Several retailers are also rolling out specific promotions aimed at Thanksgiving. Kroger, Giant Eagle, and Walmart have all launched savings initiatives in anticipation of the holiday season. Giant Eagle is offering an average of 20% savings on over 200 items and is providing a free turkey with qualifying purchases. Walmart is promoting an "inflation-free" Thanksgiving meal designed to feed eight people at $7 per plate, extending this promotion through to December 25.
With these developments, AI technology is poised to alleviate some of the financial pressure on consumers amid fluctuating market conditions, presenting a practical solution for household budgeting. The convergence of AI tools and retailer strategies offers a glimpse into the future of grocery shopping, where smart technology plays an integral role in cost management.
