Aptos Orbital Launches Cutting-Edge AI Satellite Platform to Revolutionise Space Communication
Los Angeles, California, October 23, 2024 – Aptos Orbital, a prominent player in the development of AI solutions for space, has unveiled an advanced satellite platform poised to transform the dynamics of satellite intelligence and communication. This significant launch introduces the 'Aptos terminal', a compact and lightweight device featuring state-of-the-art space-hardened processing, seamlessly integrated with cloud services and connectivity technology. This remarkable platform enables satellites to operate sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) in orbit, facilitating the live transmission of data back to Earth.
Yonatan Winetruab, the founder of Aptos Orbital, articulated the company's mission to advance satellite capabilities. "Today's satellites are siloed from modern cloud environments, hampered by the lack of onboard compute power, and have multi-hour coverage gaps. At Aptos Orbital, we are changing that," he stated. "Our goal is to make satellites as intelligent and accessible as any computer on Earth. By embedding AI onboard, we can process live satellite data at the source and transmit the processed, actionable information back to Earth."
Typically, satellites rely on terrestrial ground stations for communication, which can result in long periods of inaccessibility. Aptos Orbital addresses these inefficiencies by enabling seamless and uninterrupted connectivity. The technology allows satellites to process important data during their orbit without being affected by weather conditions or geographical location. This process empowers customers to interact with their satellites in a manner akin to interfacing with terrestrial computer systems. Furthermore, these terminals offer extended cloud services to satellites, effectively transforming them into agile components of networks based on Earth.
A pivotal aspect of this innovation is the collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), which has been named as the exclusive cloud service partner for Aptos Orbital's hardware. This partnership heralds the integration of advanced cloud computing capabilities into the realm of space, promising vast opportunities for innovation across diverse sectors.
Aptos Orbital's successful track record spans over five years of operations, during which its terminals have demonstrated robust performance in space. From design through to operational deployment, these units have transitioned to space within six months, with several units currently operational and dozens more planned for deployment this year. The company has secured commitments from eight clients, generating investments exceeding $100 million, with notable clients such as ThinkOrbital.
Colonel Lee Rosen (USAF, Ret.), co-founder and CEO of ThinkOrbital Inc., highlighted the transformative impact of Aptos Orbital's technology on their operations. "Aptos has been a great partner with ThinkOrbital and is set to revolutionize our on-orbit servicing and space domain awareness operations. Their cutting-edge technology, designed for the demanding conditions of space, provides real-time cloud access and on-orbit processing capabilities. This empowers us to execute critical tasks with unprecedented precision and efficiency," he explained.
Looking forward, Aptos Orbital envisions the establishment of a constellation comprising over 1,000 satellites by the year 2030. This ambitious network is anticipated to deliver seamless connectivity for satellite operators while enabling developers on Earth to unlock the full potential of satellite-derived data.
The unveiling of the Aptos terminal signals a new era in satellite communication, offering a glimpse into the future where AI and cloud technologies converge to enhance human capabilities in space exploration and communication.
