DeepHealth, a renowned provider of artificial intelligence solutions tailored for the medical sector, has announced the acquisition of London-based Kheiron Medical Technologies Limited. This strategic move aims to bolster DeepHealth's portfolio of AI-powered diagnostic and screening tools, which are integral to advancing breast, lung, prostate, and neurological care.
Kheiron Medical Technologies is noted for its flagship AI platform, Mammography Intelligent Assessment (Mia), which is specifically designed to enhance breast cancer screening processes. The Mia platform employs cutting-edge deep learning techniques in conjunction with radiological insights to adeptly identify malignancies within mammogram images. The tool is highly regarded for its ability to improve the efficiency, consistency, and accuracy of radiology reporting.
Peter Kecskemethy, co-founder of Kheiron, expressed optimism about the acquisition. He stated that integrating Kheiron's technology with DeepHealth's offerings would further empower radiologists with advanced tools, enabling them to detect the most subtle lesions and optimise breast cancer screening processes more effectively.
The acquisition falls within a broader trend of increasing use of AI in healthcare. Across the NHS, artificial intelligence is already being utilised for various applications, including the diagnosis of skin cancers and the detection of cancerous tumours during colonoscopies. AI is being harnessed in other medical realms as well, such as identifying abnormalities that may lead to bowel cancer. Notably, a team from the University of Huddersfield has developed a secure threat intelligence sharing platform intended to protect AI-enabled diagnostic tools from potential cyber threats. Furthermore, there has been a call for greater application of AI and machine learning technologies in the field of suicide prevention.
This acquisition by DeepHealth is not an isolated incident in the healthcare technology sector. Recently, Huma, a prominent company known for its AI and digital health solutions, acquired eConsult, which specialises in digital-first triage and automated consultation systems. Similarly, DrDoctor, a patient engagement platform, expanded into mental health by acquiring Maia from Mindwave Ventures, a personal health record platform suited to mental health care. Earlier this year, there were other notable acquisitions, such as Agilio's acquisition of Mediapharm, a pharmacy e-learning business, and CCube Solutions' acquisition of Thomson Screening Solutions, a provider of child health clinical applications.
The gathering momentum in these acquisitions showcases a strong trend towards integrating AI and digital solutions into various facets of healthcare, providing enhanced capabilities and efficiencies across different medical domains.
