Duke Professor Appointed First Chief Economist at OpenAI to Explore AI's Economic Impact
In an effort to delve into the evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) within the global workforce, OpenAI has appointed Aaron "Ronnie" Chatterji as its inaugural chief economist. The $157-billion San Francisco-based AI startup, known for its creation of the groundbreaking language model ChatGPT, made the announcement on 23rd October 2024.
Chatterji, a distinguished scholar from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, will continue his academic duties while leading economic research for OpenAI. His appointment marks a strategic move by the company to better understand and anticipate the changes AI is set to bring to economies worldwide. As artificial intelligence technology progresses, it holds the potential to both disrupt and create job sectors, something OpenAI aims to explore under Chatterji’s guidance.
The position of chief economist at OpenAI is a pioneering role for Chatterji. He comes with a robust background in public policy and economics, having served as an economic adviser during both the Obama and Biden administrations. His recent tenure at the White House as the coordinator for CHIPS Implementation at the National Economic Council showcased his ability to manage large-scale federal initiatives, further preparing him for his new responsibilities at OpenAI.
OpenAI, established in 2015, gained significant attention when it launched ChatGPT in late 2022, a tool that has sparked widespread interest in the potential of AI. The company, originally a nonprofit research institute, recently announced a structural shift towards a for-profit corporation. This change coincides with a successful funding round where OpenAI secured $6.6 billion, inflating its market valuation to over $150 billion.
CEO Sam Altman of OpenAI has expressed strong beliefs about the transformative power of AI, hinting at a future where everyone could potentially have a "personal AI team." Altman’s vision, as detailed in his essay "The Intelligence Age," encompasses a broad shift in industries such as healthcare and education, predicting that most jobs will adapt gradually to AI integration.
Chatterji’s task will be to analyse these potential shifts, investigating who stands to gain and possibly lose as AI becomes more entrenched in day-to-day life. His work will support OpenAI's mission to ensure the equitable distribution of AI’s benefits. "I am excited to apply my skills to support OpenAI’s mission to ensure that the benefits of artificial intelligence are widely distributed," Chatterji articulated in his statement following his appointment.
His past work, including an attempted but unsuccessful run for North Carolina State Treasurer in 2020, highlights his robust engagement with both economic policy and public service, traits likely to be instrumental in his new role.
OpenAI's decision to appoint Chatterji underscores the growing importance of understanding AI’s economic implications as societies worldwide grapple with its rapid integration and evolution. Through this appointment, OpenAI aims to contribute valuable insights to the ongoing discourse on AI and its potential to reshape economic landscapes.
