Silicon Valley had its sights on the stars during the MilSat Symposium of the Silicon Valley Space Week, where an in-depth exploration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its burgeoning role within the space industry took centre stage. Held on October 23rd, the symposium saw a diverse panel, moderated by Dr Eric Anderson, President of And One Technologies, engage in robust discussions regarding AI's potential and current applications in space.

The panel included industry and military experts, each bringing unique insights into how AI is transforming space operations. Col. Heather Bogstie of the US Space Force's Space Systems Command highlighted the need for absolute reliability in large language models like ChatGPT when integrating them into space missions. She explained AI's significant role in processing missile warning data and aiding in battle space awareness yet stressed the importance of human oversight, especially in mission-critical situations such as responding to missile threats. She candidly noted, “I am not sure that AI is ready to be used on a mission-critical task, such as an incoming missile.”

Dr Brian Barritt, Chief Technology Officer at Aalyria, added to the discourse by underscoring AI's utility in decoding government solicitations efficiently. He was particularly enthusiastic about AI's capability in optimising the deployment of multi-beam satellites, navigating the myriad permutations involved in using spot beams, and tackling challenges of limited satellite backhaul and adverse weather conditions.

Evan Rogers, CEO and Co-founder of True Anomaly, spoke about AI's advantage in lightening the human operator's workload by swiftly interpreting operational changes. However, he cautioned that AI requires guidance on prioritising information, indicating that indiscriminate data processing could be counterproductive.

Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Kim Crider, Founding Partner of Elara Nova, provided examples of AI facilitating space operations, especially in analysing large data volumes for electronic warfare and jamming attack responses. She emphasised the significance of keeping human judgment central to mission decision-making processes.

Col. (Rtd) Todd Brost, now overseeing business development at Slingshot Aerospace, shared how AI has enhanced their capabilities in identifying satellite payloads and characteristics through a network of telescopes. He acknowledged the role of AI in fostering institutional learning by ensuring missions evolve from their predecessors' experiences.

Collectively, the experts at the symposium conveyed that the integration of AI into space technology is advancing, promising enhancements in operational efficiency, data handling, decision-making, and overall mission success. However, the discussion unanimously pointed towards a cautious approach with human oversight remaining a crucial element as AI continues to evolve in the realm of space exploration and defence.
