Garford Farm Machinery Unveils Revolutionary Robocrop AI for Precision Weeding
Peterborough-based Garford Farm Machinery has introduced the latest advancement in agricultural technology with its Robocrop AI InRow system, heralded as a significant leap forward in precision weeding technology. This new development, announced recently by the company, promises to enhance productivity and efficiency in crop management through its innovative use of artificial intelligence.
The Robocrop AI system is a product of meticulous development by a team of mechatronic, software, and data engineers at Garford. It aims to set a new standard in vision guidance technology by offering enhanced flexibility and resilience under various environmental conditions, including fluctuating light and increased weed pressure.
Innovative 'Green on Green' Recognition
A standout feature of the Robocrop AI is its 'green on green' plant recognition ability. This new system represents a shift from the traditional 'green on brown' model, which relied solely on colour for plant recognition. The system integrates multi-modal vision guidance technology, utilising colour, infrared, and depth data to accurately identify and differentiate crop plants from weeds.
Jonathan Henry, Managing Director of Garford Farm Machinery, explained the technological leap: "This new system uses multiple different data streams from the camera, and is able to then identify crop plants and distinguish those from weeds or non-crop plants."
Precision and Resilience
The multi-modal camera system, a key component of Robocrop AI, utilises a combination of colour and infrared cameras along with depth imaging to accurately detect stem locations of plants even in complex scenarios where leaves overlap. This advancement enables the system to hoe closer to plants, thus enhancing weed control efficacy.
The AI system is trained to recognise the specific shapes and profiles of crop plants, ensuring that precision is maintained even under challenging conditions such as varied lighting or when entering fields with intensified weed pressure. As noted by Mr Henry, "Using multiple data streams means that...you can still identify the crop plants and hoe with high precision."
Launch and Availability
Set for release in the 2025 agricultural season, the Robocrop AI will initially be available for Garford's InRow electric rotor weeders, specifically tailored for salad, brassica, and sugar beet crops. It will feature single section steering systems with options for single and double camera configurations, displayed on a 10.1-inch terminal that streams live images and manages sideshift positioning.
Garford Farm Machinery plans to expand the functionality of Robocrop AI with additional camera support and multi-section capabilities in future iterations. The system is slated to be available through Garford's extensive network of dealerships and distributors within the UK and internationally.
