Google Ads is set to enhance its Performance Max campaigns by introducing a suite of new artificial intelligence (AI)-driven features. This initiative aims to improve asset testing, video optimisation, and overall campaign management. The updates arrive in anticipation of the holiday shopping season, providing advertisers with advanced tools to optimise their marketing strategies.

A significant component of the updates is the introduction of new asset testing capabilities. Starting from early November, retailers will be able to access experimental features within Performance Max. These features will allow advertisers to measure the effectiveness of additional assets beyond product feeds, such as images, text, and video content. Additionally, Google is implementing Final URL expansion testing to enable advertisers to assess if alternative landing pages can enhance conversion rates by better aligning with user intent.

Another major update involves the integration of Imagen 3, Google's latest text-to-image AI model, into the Google Ads platform. This model aims to create higher-performing visuals across various campaigns, including Performance Max, Demand Gen, App, and Display campaigns. Imagen 3 has been trained on advertising performance data to produce more effective commercial imagery, potentially boosting campaign results.

In terms of video content, Google Ads is rolling out tools for automated video optimisation. These tools include automatic aspect ratio adaptation suitable for different YouTube formats, smart video shortening while maintaining key messages, and more granular control over enhanced video assets. These features come with built-in quality controls and opt-out options available at both the campaign and individual asset levels. Notably, although most features are already accessible, video shortening capabilities for Demand Gen campaigns are scheduled for release in 2025.

Google has also announced modifications to the campaign hierarchy for Performance Max and Standard Shopping campaigns. Previously, there was an automatic prioritisation for Performance Max campaigns. This will now transition to an Ad Rank-based system, which determines which ads to serve when both campaign types target the same products within an account. This change is expected to refine and clarify ad delivery processes.

Another update involves improved collaboration features. Google is expanding its shareable ad previews to Performance Max campaigns that include product feeds and travel objectives. This development is designed to streamline the creative review process by providing preview access to any stakeholders, bypassing the need for Google Ads credentials.

These updates underline Google's ongoing commitment to AI-enhanced advertising, aligning with the needs of businesses as they prepare for seasonal sales peaks. The updates are strategically timed to allow advertisers to optimise their holiday marketing campaigns. While most of the new features are rolling out immediately, retailers will gain access to specific tools, such as the new asset testing capabilities, in early November. Video shortening for Demand Gen campaigns, however, will not be available until 2025. These enhancements offer advertisers new ways to elevate their campaign performance with experimental features and improved creative possibilities.
