Google has announced a new feature for its Google Photos application that will make it easier for users to identify images that have been edited using artificial intelligence (AI) tools. Starting next week, the app will begin rolling out an AI Info section dedicated to photos that have undergone modifications through AI-driven features such as Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, and Zoom Enhance.

As articulated in Google's announcement, the integration of this new feature capitalises on the existing utilisation of the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) metadata format. This metadata system is already employed to denote that images have been edited using generative AI technologies. The new AI Info section will now make such details more transparent and easily accessible to users. This information will appear alongside other image data, such as file name, location, and backup status within the Google Photos interface.

The AI Info section is designed to provide users with specific details about the nature of the AI modifications applied to a photograph. It is expected to include metadata fields such as Credit and Digital Source Type, enhancing users’ understanding of the alterations made by AI tools.

Furthermore, Google has incorporated IPTC metadata not only for images modified by generative AI but also for those enhanced using non-generative AI features such as Best Take and Add Me, which are available on Pixel devices. These features allow users to combine elements from multiple photos to create a new, optimised image. However, Google has yet to elaborate on whether the metadata pertaining to these non-generative features will also be viewable by users within Google Photos.

By introducing this feature, Google aims to provide greater transparency around the use of AI in image editing, adding another layer of information for the benefit of its users. This initiative reflects the growing integration of AI technologies in digital photo editing and the importance of understanding how these technologies interact with user content. As Google Photos continues to evolve, this update represents a significant step towards providing users with a comprehensive view of their digital images.
