Infosys and University of Cambridge Collaborate to Launch Pioneering AI Lab in London
In a strategic move to bridge industry expertise with academic prowess, Infosys has joined hands with the University of Cambridge to establish a joint Artificial Intelligence (AI) Lab in London. This initiative is part of Infosys' commitment to foster innovation and harness AI's capabilities to tackle real-world challenges. The collaboration marks a significant milestone in shifting technological frontiers by integrating Infosys' practical AI applications with Cambridge University's renowned research and educational excellence.
The newly instituted AI Lab, alongside Infosys' London Living Labs, is situated within Infosys' contemporary 25,000 square foot premises. This new workspace, capable of accommodating up to 200 employees, embraces modern design philosophies, specifically biophilic principles. This approach seamlessly integrates sustainable practices with modular and adaptive designs to promote a harmonious work environment. The office's exceptional sustainability has been acknowledged with a Gold SKA Rating—an accolade awarded to structures demonstrating superior standards in energy efficiency, water conservation, waste management, and minimal environmental footprint.
Tarang Puranik, the Executive Vice President and Head of Delivery for Europe at Infosys, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative. He highlighted how the facilities in London would empower enterprises to swiftly adapt to dynamic business landscapes while accelerating their digital transformation with innovative solutions. Puranik noted, “London, a hub for some of the world’s most innovative and forward-looking companies, will see significant investments through this state-of-the-art collaborative workspace featuring the AI Lab developed in collaboration with the University of Cambridge.”
The project has also garnered attention from Feryal Clark, the UK's Minister for Digital Government and AI. Clark articulated the UK government's commitment to infusing AI at the core of economic growth strategy, praising Infosys' new London establishment as a nexus for organisations and researchers to maximise AI's potential. Reflecting on the nation's appeal as a destination for international investment, Clark pointed to the recent International Investment Summit which secured £63 billion in global investments as evidence of the UK’s growing business allure. She emphasised the importance of providing British businesses with the proper support to embrace ongoing technological advancements.
Colm-cille Caulfield, serving as the Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics and Co-Chair for the Cambridge Centre for Data-Driven Discovery, underscored the collaboration's academic significance. Celebrating Cambridge's illustrious history in mathematical sciences and its pioneering role in data-driven innovation, he noted how this partnership with Infosys aligns with the university's tradition of open interdisciplinary inquiry. Caulfield stated, “This collaboration offers a remarkable opportunity to further knowledge by discovering innovative applications of AI across various domains, from scientific advancement to societal improvement. We are eager to advance this journey together.”
