Microsoft has announced an intriguing update to its Photos app, introducing a feature called Super Resolution, which aims to significantly enhance the quality and resolution of low-resolution images using artificial intelligence (AI). This development was detailed in a recent blog post and is part of Microsoft's ongoing commitment to integrating AI functionalities within its Windows 11 ecosystem.
Super Resolution is designed to increase the resolution of images by up to eightfold. This enhancement could prove invaluable for users wishing to revitalise old photographs taken with outdated digital cameras, and for those seeking to upscale images for various creative and editorial purposes. The initiative underscores a broader AI roadmap outlined by Microsoft for its Windows 11 operating system.
However, the accessibility of this feature is currently limited. Super Resolution is exclusively available on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs. These advanced PCs are equipped with a Neural Processing Unit (NPU), which handles the AI processing. This set-up allows the central processing unit (CPU) and graphics processing unit (GPU) to remain free for other tasks, thereby optimising overall system performance. It remains uncertain if Super Resolution will eventually be extended to PCs without these specific capabilities, though indications suggest this is unlikely.
As of now, the Super Resolution feature is available to participants of the Windows Insider Program across all its channels on Windows 11. This programme allows users to access early builds of the software for testing and feedback. Despite this, a firm release date for its inclusion in the stable version of Windows 11 has not been disclosed by Microsoft.
In addition to Super Resolution, the Photos app update brings several other enhancements. Notably, it includes Optical Character Recognition (OCR) support, which enables users to extract text from images and copy it to the clipboard. This functionality is available for both Windows 10 and Windows 11 users. Other smaller updates include improvements in the usability of the Zoom feature and a streamlined process for opening images directly from the File Explorer’s Gallery with a single click.
These updates reflect Microsoft's continuous efforts to enhance user experience through technological innovation, particularly through the integration of AI. As the rollout of these features continues, users eagerly anticipate their broad availability and potential future developments.
