In a speech at the TED AI conference in San Francisco, Noam Brown, a leading research scientist at OpenAI, discussed the potential transformative impact of OpenAI’s latest model, o1, on various industries. Brown, known for his work on AI systems like Libratus and CICERO, presented a bold vision where artificial intelligence moves beyond being merely a tool and evolves into a central engine for innovation and decision-making across numerous sectors.

Brown began his address by summarising recent advancements in AI, attributing much of the progress to the scaling of data and computational power. He acknowledged that these developments have been foundational but asserted the necessity for a shift towards incorporating "system two thinking" into AI processes. This concept, originally popularised by psychologist Daniel Kahneman, involves slower, more deliberate reasoning, akin to human problem-solving approaches.

To illustrate his point, Brown referred to his experience with Libratus, an AI designed to play poker. He recounted a pivotal moment during his PhD when Libratus demonstrated enhanced performance with a mere 20-second thought process per poker hand, equating to improvements comparable to increasing the model's size by a factor of 100,000. This revelation, initially mistaken as a bug, underscored the significant potential of integrating system two thinking into AI.

OpenAI's o1 model, launched in September 2024, is designed to embrace this approach. By processing information with more care, the model is suited for complex tasks in areas such as scientific research, strategic decision-making, and coding. Early benchmarks reveal that the o1 model scored an impressive 83% accuracy on the International Mathematics Olympiad qualifying exam, a substantial increase from the 13% achieved by OpenAI’s earlier model, GPT-4o.

For businesses, the o1 model promises benefits that extend beyond mere academic performance. Brown suggested that system two thinking can enhance decision-making processes within industries such as healthcare, energy, and finance. He highlighted its potential impact on cancer treatment and renewable energy development, asserting that the o1 model could accelerate data analysis and hypothesis generation, ultimately leading to new breakthroughs.

Despite its advantages, Brown acknowledged the scepticism surrounding slower AI models, recognising concerns about the patience and cost required. The o1 model is slower and more expensive to operate compared to its predecessors, with reports indicating significant costs associated with its deployment. However, Brown argued that for critical problems, the investment in time and resources would be justified.

OpenAI's pivot towards system two thinking sets it apart in the AI sector, where companies like Google and Meta are heavily investing. While competitors focus on speed and multimodal tasks, OpenAI’s emphasis on deep reasoning could prove to be a differentiator, particularly in fields requiring high-accuracy insights.

Concluding his presentation, Brown highlighted that the development of AI is on the verge of a significant transformation. With system two thinking just beginning to be scaled, the future of AI promises a new frontier of innovation and application across diverse industries.
