In the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, the Chinese smartphone giant Oppo is strategically investing in AI technology to enhance its product offerings and expand its global presence. As of the latest reports, Oppo, which holds a significant position as the second-largest smartphone provider in mainland China and fourth globally, is actively engaging in partnerships with tech titans Google and Microsoft.

Oppo has been involved in weekly discussions with senior management at Google and Microsoft, aiming to integrate advanced AI functionalities into its forthcoming flagship phone. This collaboration forms part of a broader initiative to tap into the burgeoning field of generative AI, a technology designed to produce responses akin to human interaction. The competitive landscape includes a varied array of companies such as Apple and Honeywell, highlighting the race towards harnessing AI capabilities.

Billy Zhang, the president of Oppo's overseas market, sales, and services, shared insights into these developments during a recent press briefing held at Oppo’s headquarters in Shenzhen, a major tech hub in southern China. According to Zhang, these discussions have involved Google representatives visiting China to better understand the challenges and needs faced by Oppo’s products, thereby fostering a collaborative problem-solving environment.

Zhang emphasised Oppo’s intent to tailor AI solutions to meet consumer demands, particularly as the company is expanding its market reach in Europe. However, there is currently no plan to penetrate the U.S. market. The company’s flagship models, set for imminent release in global markets, will feature AI writing and recording summary tools powered by Google’s Gemini and Microsoft’s text-to-speech technologies.

The forthcoming Oppo Find X8 series, announced without a specified release date, will exemplify the integration of such AI tools, although the extent of AI incorporation in existing Oppo smartphone models remains unspecified.

Oppo's aggressive strategy in the AI domain aligns with market predictions for significant growth. Counterpoint Research forecasts a surge in global shipments of generative AI smartphones, projecting an increase from 46 million units in the previous year to an anticipated 732 million units by 2028. This projection underscores the potential transformation AI is expected to bring to the tech industry.

In June, Oppo committed to embedding generative AI across approximately 50 million of its devices within the year. The current AI features in its smartphones enable photo enhancement functionalities, including removing unwanted reflections in images. Additionally, Oppo has its own chatbot akin to ChatGPT and has been developing proprietary AI models since 2020, further evidenced by the establishment of an AI centre earlier this year.

The continuous innovation in AI is also reflected among other competitors. Apple is planning to introduce its software update rich with AI capabilities shortly, and the Chinese company Honor recently unveiled a new operating system version designed to simulate user actions through AI, illustrating the broader trend of AI-driven technological advancements.

These strategic developments by Oppo exemplify the competitive dynamism in the AI sector, as firms look to redefine consumer experiences and enhance production efficiency through advanced technology.
