In an unprecedented move that reflects the rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into media industries, OFF Radio Krakow, a subsidiary of the larger Radio Krakow, has transitioned to an AI-led broadcasting format. The station, which operates online and via DAB+, announced this week that it has introduced three AI-generated presenters named Emi, Kuba, and Alex. These virtual hosts have been equipped with distinct, fabricated personalities and backgrounds devised by station journalists, and they are set to lead programming efforts, an initiative spearheaded by Editor-in-Chief Marcin Pulit.

According to Pulit, the content for these AI hosts is crafted by professional journalists using AI tools. Once generated, the material undergoes verification by the journalists before being converted into audio formats for broadcast. This approach extends to written content on the station's website as well as the musical selections to be featured in the once-weekly "authorial" music segments.

The inception of this AI-centric strategy has been met with controversy, particularly relating to the station's recent dismissal of numerous on-air staff members. Mateusz Demski, a former broadcaster with OFF Radio Krakow, has criticised the move, likening it to a larger trend seen in the entertainment industry where AI threatens traditional creative roles, as exemplified in recent Hollywood disputes. Demski’s objections have garnered significant public support, manifesting in a petition that has amassed over 20,000 signatures urging the station to abort this AI-centric project.

Pulit, however, contends that the decision to introduce AI was not financially motivated nor was it responsible for the end of contributors’ contracts, which he claims were non-addressable given their temporary nature. He described this transition as an experimental exploration into AI’s role within cultural and journalistic contexts, posing fundamental inquiries about the prospects and dangers AI poses to media.

This transition at OFF Radio Krakow coincides with broader shifts within Polish public media. The national landscape is being reshaped by new governmental initiatives following political changes led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk. These reforms aim to depoliticise the state-influenced media, including forcing 17 regional public radio stations, such as Radio Krakow, into restructuring. Pulit, also named as the liquidator for the overarching Radio Krakow network, has voiced concerns about the station's financial viability, previously stating that there was uncertainty in meeting employee payroll.

Despite assurances that this move was not intended as a cost-cutting measure, the financial strain on Radio Krakow was evident, raising questions about the true motivations behind the AI experiment. The implementation of AI hosts appears, at least superficially, as a potential strategy to alleviate fiscal pressures amid these restructuring demands.

Interestingly, Pulit has noted that this AI initiative is not an indefinite change. The station plans for this project to be short-lived, with an intended duration of no more than three months, during which its impact will be evaluated. The future of digital hosts Emi, Kuba, and Alex remains uncertain, as the station seems committed to revisiting the format post-evaluation.

As the media landscape in Poland continues to evolve in response to technological advancements and political reforms, the case of OFF Radio Krakow presents a focal point of discussion regarding the place of AI in traditional media roles, and its possible implications on employment, content creation, and audience engagement.
