Sony's PS5 Pro Upscaling Technology Surpasses AMD's FSR 3.1

Sony's upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro has introduced a cutting-edge AI upscaling technology known as PSSR, which appears to outperform AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) version 3.1. This development marks a significant step for Sony, edging its new console closer to the capabilities of Nvidia's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), a leading upscaling technology in the gaming industry.

The enhanced console, which was showcased in a presentation by Mark Cerny, PlayStation's Lead Designer, has stirred a mixed reception due to its pricing, which is similar to that of a pre-built gaming PC. Despite this, the PS5 Pro boasts several enticing features that distinguish it from its predecessor. These include the new PSSR AI upscaling, a 28% increase in RAM speed, and a 67% increase in compute units aimed at boosting performance, particularly when using ray-tracing technology. However, the console retains the same internal CPU as the base model.

A hands-on review from Digital Foundry has provided a glimpse into the potential of the PSSR technology. During the testing, the PSSR in ‘Performance Mode’ displayed superior clarity and detail when compared to AMD's FSR 3.1, particularly while running Insomniac Games' "Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart". This has heightened interest in PSSR's capabilities among gaming enthusiasts.

However, the premium pricing of $699.99 (£699 / AU$1,199.95) may deter some consumers, who are weighing the added benefits against the cost. The current line-up of exclusive games expected for the platform in 2025 includes titles like Sucker Punch’s "Ghost of Yotei", Bungie’s "Marathon", and Insomniac's "Wolverine". Nevertheless, the trend of PlayStation exclusives becoming available on PC offers further alternatives for gamers to consider.

In terms of hardware competition, AMD seems to be facing significant challenges. The PS5 Pro's adoption of PSSR places Sony ahead of AMD's FSR, and the graphics card market sees Nvidia maintaining its dominance, particularly in the gaming laptop sector. However, AMD is pivoting with a focus on incorporating AI technologies into their upcoming releases, with the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme APU expected to enhance battery life and performance in gaming handhelds.
