Tim Burton Exhibition Set to Dazzle London Audiences at the Design Museum
London's Design Museum is set to enchant visitors with an immersive exhibition celebrating the fantastical universe of renowned filmmaker Tim Burton. Titled “The World of Tim Burton,” the display will open its doors on Friday and promises to be a thrilling homage to Burton's illustrious career. The event is already generating significant buzz, having achieved the status of the fastest-selling exhibition in the history of the museum.
The exhibition coincides with Halloween, an apt time to explore Burton's distinctive blend of eccentricity and macabre. It will run until April 21, 2025, offering ample opportunity for fans and curious visitors alike to delve into the artistic world of the visionary director. Over 600 items will be showcased, drawing from movie studio collections and Burton’s personal archives. Highlights include iconic costumes such as Jenna Ortega’s dress from Wednesday and Michele Pfeiffer’s Catwoman suit from the 1992 film "Batman Returns."
Significantly, the exhibition features 90 new pieces, offering a fresh perspective for those already familiar with Burton's work. The collection, which has journeyed across 14 cities in 11 countries over the past decade, is making its UK debut with this final exhibition.
During a preview on Wednesday, Tim Burton, aged 66, expressed his admiration for the way the exhibition has been curated. Speaking with the PA news agency, he described his reaction to seeing the exhibit as initially “very shocking” but praised the curators for their adept selection of items. “They did a beautiful job, it’s like walking through kind of a fun house,” he remarked, acknowledging the personal nature of the display that unfurls a narrative journey of his creative process.
The Design Museum exhibition will be segmented into various phases of Burton’s career, with sections dedicated to different movie landscapes and characters. Attendees will encounter well-known figures from Burton’s films, such as the Martians from "Mars Attacks!" the Mad Hatter from "Alice in Wonderland", and Emily from "Corpse Bride."
Further enhancing the visitor experience is a custom soundscape curated by sound designer Tomi Rose, enveloping attendees in an auditory tapestry woven to complement the visual elements. A standout feature is a reconstruction of Burton’s studio, offering a peek into his working environment and artistic method.
The exhibition culminates in a specially curated cinema experience, where a newly commissioned film will explore the insights of Burton's key collaborators. This film will be screened in an art-deco inspired space, reminiscent of the cinematic venues of Burton’s youth in Hollywood.
Due to high demand, the museum will extend its hours, remaining open late on Friday and Saturday evenings throughout 2024. Design Museum members are granted free access without the need for pre-booking, while non-members will need tickets. Prices start at £19.69 for adults, £9.85 for children aged six to fifteen, and entry is free for those under the age of six.
In conjunction with the exhibition, the Design Museum will release a new book, "Tim Burton: Designing Worlds," further enriching the immersive experience. This exhibition not only offers an in-depth look at Burton's works but also explores the intricate paths between imagination and filmmaking artistry that he navigates with such unique flair.
