UC San Diego has unveiled a pioneering initiative to enhance its capacity in artificial intelligence and data science with the establishment of the School of Computing, Information, and Data Sciences (SCIDS). This new educational and research hub integrates the longstanding expertise of the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) and the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute (HDSI), marking a significant advancement in the university’s commitment to cutting-edge technological and scientific research.
Located within the university campus, SCIDS represents a strategic move to address various global challenges by utilising data science and artificial intelligence. It aims to go beyond technical prowess, placing emphasis on the responsible application of data-driven insights for societal improvement. The initiative, according to the school’s website, seeks to foster a wide-ranging educational environment, opening pathways for students, researchers, and staff to transform data into actionable knowledge across numerous disciplines.
SCIDS Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla highlighted the crucial role the new school will play in producing data-literate graduates who can contribute to California's and the broader global society’s needs. His comments, featured in UC San Diego Today, emphasised the school's focus on integrating computing and data literacy into critical research and public service missions, particularly in elevating the development of artificial intelligence.
The school incorporates the foundational strengths of both SDSC and HDSI. Established in 1985, SDSC emerged from a successful proposal to the National Science Foundation for enhanced computing resources in academia. Recognized as a leader in supercomputing and high-performance computing (HPC) research, SDSC has significantly contributed to advances in data storage, cloud computing, and large-scale data management. The centre is headquartered at UC San Diego and is instrumental in providing computational support to researchers both locally and beyond.
Meanwhile, HDSI, established in 2018 with generous support from alumnus Taner Halıcıoğlu, brings expertise in interdisciplinary research that spans computer science, communications, and societal impacts of data science. The institute is credited with developing new computational methods and mathematical models, alongside guiding students in evaluating the societal and ethical dimensions of data science.
With these strengths combined, SCIDS is set to serve as a powerful catalyst for innovation in computational research and AI education. Interim dean and distinguished professor, Rajesh Gupta, indicated that the school intends to unlock new synergies and possibilities, leveraging the legacy of both SDSC and HDSI to cultivate talent in emerging and crucial sectors.
Frank Würthwein, director of the San Diego Supercomputer Center and professor at the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute, articulated that SCIDS will expedite the application of foundational research to practical societal problems. These include climate change mitigation strategies, social justice issues such as food security, and advancements in healthcare like personalized medicine.
To support its vision, SCIDS boasts a faculty comprising 50 researchers across 16 diverse academic fields. This multidisciplinary team aims to provide students not only with technical skills but also with critical analytical tools and an ethical framework to address complex global challenges.
UCSD’s inauguration of SCIDS reflects a wider global trend where educational institutions are actively re-evaluating the role of data science and AI. With data becoming increasingly central to decision-making in numerous sectors, there is a surge in demand for professionals with comprehensive knowledge extending beyond technical expertise to include analytical reasoning and ethical consideration.
