Coinbase Introduces 'Based Agent': A New Tool for Building AI Agents
In a recent announcement, Lincoln Murr, a developer associated with Coinbase, unveiled a pioneering tool dubbed 'Based Agent', designed to facilitate the rapid creation of artificial intelligence (AI) agents utilising crypto wallets. Murr made this announcement via a post on platform X on the 26th of October.
Innovation in AI and Cryptocurrency
The 'Based Agent' tool is set to revolutionise the way users interact with blockchain technology by allowing them to develop AI agents swiftly—within just three minutes according to Murr. These AI agents, or bots, will be empowered to perform a variety of on-chain tasks such as trading and staking. In essence, an AI agent in this context is a bot programmed to undertake specific blockchain-related tasks autonomously.
Murr provided further insight into the functionality of the tool through a video attached to his post. He explained that the purpose of Based Agent is to streamline the process of constructing AI agents, making it accessible and straightforward for users.
Technical Overview
While technically termed an autonomous on-chain agent framework, akin to a template, Based Agent simplifies the process by facilitating user access to diverse smart contract functionalities. One of the notable features of the tool is its mode options, which include a fully autonomous version. This allows users to create agents capable of conducting independent on-chain interactions.
Once these agents are built, they can undertake tasks such as executing trades, performing swaps, engaging in staking, and even registering their own base names. Furthermore, Based Agent is equipped with an X application programming interface (API), enabling users to convert their AI agents into bots on the X platform.
Collaborations and Resources
The development of Based Agent was accomplished using the Coinbase software development kit (SDK), with significant contributions from OpenAI—known for creating ChatGPT—and the collaborative software creation platform, Replit.
To kickstart the creation of an AI agent, users need to procure an API key from the Coinbase developer program, alongside a key from OpenAI, and duplicate the Replit template. Murr emphasised the simplicity of the process, noting the ease with which users can customise the agents' functionality.
Recent Developments and Context
The introduction of Based Agent follows closely on the heels of a notable development within Coinbase: the execution of the first transaction between AI agents, which occurred less than a month prior. At that juncture, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong acknowledged the limitations of AI agents in handling tasks autonomously due to existing technological constraints.
In a related context earlier this week, Armstrong expressed readiness to assist Truth Terminal, an increasingly popular AI agent on X, in establishing its own crypto wallet. Though AI agents are unable to possess traditional bank accounts, they can indeed own crypto wallets.
As the world of cryptocurrency continues to interlace with AI advancements, the launch of Coinbase’s Based Agent signifies a significant stride towards enhanced automation and user engagement with blockchain technologies.
