Mariam Naficy, an eminent figure in the realm of creative commerce, has stepped into a bold new venture with the launch of Arcade AI, a pioneering generative AI platform that revolutionises the jewellery design landscape. Known for founding the cosmetics retailer Eve and the design marketplace Minted, Naficy continues her legacy of empowering independent creators by placing design control in the hands of users with Arcade AI.
Unveiled in its beta phase in September, Arcade AI invites users, aptly termed “Dreamers”, to harness the power of AI technology to create personalised jewellery designs. By inputting their ideas or uploading images, users are presented with various design options that reflect their unique vision. Once a design, or “Dream”, is chosen, it is realised into a physical product by one of Arcade's artisans, creating pieces that range from rings and necklaces to bracelets and earrings using a myriad of materials such as gold, silver, brass, and an array of gemstones like diamonds and rubies.
In a test run of the platform, the AI generator crafted a gold floral necklace featuring opals based on personalised input, demonstrating the fusion of technology and bespoke jewellery artistry. The journey from concept to tangible item took approximately two weeks, highlighting the efficiency of Arcade's process. Despite some challenges with complex designs and functionality, the AI's capability to cater to diverse preferences is evident.
Arcade AI provides an editing tool enabling users to refine and modify their designs, though it admits room for enhancement. Plans for further development include introducing features like Image Prompt (IP) Adapters, designed to enhance image-based prompts in text-to-image generation, and tools for users to manipulate specific elements of their designs.
Customisation comes with varying costs, with simpler creations starting around $100 and more intricate pieces potentially exceeding $1,000. Additional costs include shipping, ranging from $10 to $30. This pricing structure aligns with the broader market for custom-designed jewellery.
A distinctive aspect of Arcade AI is the opportunity for users to earn a commission of 2.5% on sales of their designs, promoting an entrepreneurial element within the community. However, criteria such as achieving 100 followers and reaching specific sales milestones must be met to qualify as a seller, with plans to allow users to set their own price points soon.
The platform's approach to AI-generated designs has sparked discussions about intellectual property and the potential impact on traditional jewellery designers. However, Naficy notes that artisans on Arcade welcome the innovation as a conduit for increased consumer engagement and understanding of market demands. The platform's AI model is designed to prevent direct replication of existing designs, maintaining the originality of creations, a concern Naficy is acutely aware of from her extensive experience with Minted.
Arcade AI is set on a path of expansion, with aspirations to diversify into other product categories like apparel and accessories, and enhance social interaction features within its community. Collaborative ventures with established brands and prize-driven competitions are also in the pipeline, promising to enrich the user experience.
Backed by an impressive $17 million in funding, Arcade AI enjoys support from high-profile investors, including Ashton Kutcher’s Sound Ventures, Offline Ventures, and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman. Other notable backers include Colin Kaepernick, Karlie Kloss, and Adept AI Labs CEO David Luan, underscoring the industry confidence and potential that Arcade AI brings to the art of jewellery design through the lens of AI innovation.
