Reflexivity Raises $30 Million in Series B Funding to Revolutionise Hedge Fund Research

In a move poised to reshape the landscape of investment research, fintech startup Reflexivity has successfully secured $30 million in its Series B funding round. The announcement, made on Monday, highlighted significant backing from influential financial figures and well-known entities in the hedge fund industry.

Reflexivity, initially launched as Toggle AI, was founded by former hedge fund traders Jan Szilagyi and Giuseppe Sette. The pair, drawing on their extensive experience in asset management, identified a persistent issue within the industry: the fragmentation of critical market data across various providers. Their vision was to streamline this process, and the recent funding supports their quest to enhance the capabilities of institutional investors and hedge funds in their decision-making processes.

Leading the investment round were Interactive Brokers, a prominent trading platform, and venture capital firm Greycroft. The funding also saw contributions from billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller and Greg Coffey, the Australian founder of hedge fund Kirkoswald. Reflexivity's existing investors, including Millennium Management’s founder Izzy Englander and General Catalyst, continued their support in the Series B round, signalling strong confidence in the company’s potential.

Reflexivity’s software is designed to amalgamate data from numerous third-party sources such as S&P Global, Refinitiv, and the London Stock Exchange Group, together with proprietary internal information. This integration offers investors a comprehensive analysis tool that can also predict the potential impacts of global and market events on their portfolios. This functionality aims to alleviate the common fear among traders of missing out on crucial trades due to isolated data points.

CEO Jan Szilagyi, who boasts nearly two decades as a portfolio manager at firms like Duquesne Capital Management and Fortress Investment Group, explained the conceptual shift behind the company’s recent name change. The term "reflexivity," popularised by renowned investor George Soros, refers to the process of examining one's own assumptions and judgments, which is crucial to advancing the research process among investment professionals.

The market for Reflexivity’s services is estimated at approximately $16.4 billion. Currently, the startup serves around 20 institutional clients, equating to about 15,000 individual users. Among its clientele are banks such as Japan’s MUFG, trading platforms like Interactive Brokers, and hedge funds including Millennium Management, Soros Fund, and ExodusPoint. Industry recognition came earlier this year when Reflexivity was named one of Business Insider’s most promising fintechs in 2023.

The valuation of Reflexivity sits between $115 million and $150 million, according to Szilagyi.

Crucial to the platform's operation is its ability to provide real-time alerts and insights into market events and their potential effects on specific investments. The software is equipped to analyse about 40,000 securities, utilising AI-driven tools to connect intricate investing relationships. Reflexivity’s system, described as a ‘closed system’ AI model, only uses vetted data, ensuring the reliability of the information it provides by avoiding the pitfalls of generative AI hallucinations—a challenge faced by more open AI models.

This advancement has been specifically tailored to address the critical demand for accuracy in financial decision-making. Szilagyi emphasizes the importance of this approach, noting, "For finance professionals, the ability to get the candid and honest answer is absolutely critical because it only takes one, two hallucinations to be extremely costly when it comes to trading."

With this fresh influx of capital, Reflexivity is set to continue its mission to enhance the way hedge funds and institutional investors interact with data, aiming to provide a seamless, comprehensive solution to the traditionally fragmented investment research process. As they proceed with their ambitious outlook, the startup anticipates further expansion and market integration, promising continued innovation in the fintech sphere.
