In a bold and short-lived experiment, OFF Radio Kraków recently ventured into the use of AI-generated presenters, making headlines with their innovative approach. Presenters Jakub “Kuba” Zieliński, Emilia “Emi” Nowak, and Alex Szulc, brought to life through artificial intelligence, took to the airwaves as part of an initiative aimed at fostering conversation around the burgeoning role of AI in media. However, the experiment, which began with ambitions of lasting up to three months, was terminated abruptly after just one week due to overwhelming public backlash.
The reception to these AI voices was largely negative, culminating in a petition that amassed over 23,000 signatures demanding action from broadcast regulators and media ethics bodies. Marcin Pulit, Editor-in-Chief of OFF Radio Kraków, explained the rationale behind the experiment as an attempt to ignite discussion on both the potential benefits and challenges presented by AI technology in the broadcasting field. Yet, he acknowledged that the intensity of the reaction was unexpected and that it rendered the continuation of the project unnecessary.
Critics, including former station presenter Mateusz Demski, were vocal about their concerns with the execution of the experiment. Demski, who spearheaded the petition against the AI broadcasters, criticised the initiative on social media. He argued it was conducted without sufficient rigour or involvement from academic or scientific communities, which he believes would have ensured a more methodical approach to evaluating AI's role in broadcasting.
Additionally, the controversy was exacerbated by the station's recent dismissal of its contracted presenters, including Demski, prior to the launch of the AI programme. This change came amid a turbulent period for Poland's regional broadcasters, all of which were undergoing court-ordered liquidation due to ongoing disputes involving various factions within the Polish government.
Despite the project’s brief duration and controversial outcome, Pulit maintained that the episode highlighted important regulatory considerations for AI's role within media industries. He suggested that the lessons learned could contribute to future legislative developments in Poland regarding AI usage. Pulit emphasised the need for robust legal standards to govern AI technology, as its integration into everyday life becomes increasingly prevalent.
This experiment at OFF Radio Kraków underscores the broader debates circulating globally about the integration of AI in various sectors, particularly those traditionally dominated by human creativity and interaction.
