Amazon has announced the European expansion of its AI-driven shopping chatbot, Rufus, following its initial launch in the United States in February. Rufus is set to enhance the shopping experience in Germany, France, Italy, and Spain, with the beta version beginning its rollout today. This follows a successful introduction in the United Kingdom in September. However, the company has cautioned that it may take several weeks before every customer in these European nations has access to the software update.

Customers looking to interact with Rufus can find its icon in the lower right-hand corner of the Amazon mobile app. Once activated, the chat box allows users to ask questions and receive assistance regarding their shopping needs. The chatbot's responses can be refined through customer feedback, with users encouraged to rate answers with a thumbs up or thumbs down. There is also a facility for submitting more detailed observations through freeform feedback.

Rufus distinguishes itself as a generative AI assistant, having been developed using Amazon's extensive product catalog, alongside customer reviews, community question and answer sections, and a wide array of information sourced from the internet. This enables the chatbot to provide users with specific product information, such as the durability of running shoes or whether a jacket can be machine-washed.

Despite its capabilities, Amazon acknowledges that generative AI is still in its developmental stage, and inaccuracies in Rufus’s responses may occasionally occur. Customers are encouraged to utilise the feedback features to help refine and improve the chatbot's accuracy over time.

For individuals in the US, Rufus has been available since earlier this year, with its presence indicated by an icon resembling two chat bubbles, accompanied by its name. As Rufus continues its rollout, it marks a significant step in Amazon's efforts to integrate artificial intelligence further into the consumer shopping experience, catering to a wider European market while continually refining the technology through direct user interaction.
