Apple has once again captured the tech world's attention with the unveiling of its latest Mac mini, now powered by the newly developed M4 and M4 Pro processors. Despite some inadvertent early revelations by Amazon, the official announcement has confirmed the anticipated features and capabilities, propelling the Mac mini into the spotlight for its impressive performance enhancements and compact design features.
The Mac mini continues to embody the advantages of Apple Silicon, showcasing advancements in power, efficiency, and affordability more prominently than ever. Available in two chip variants—the M4 and M4 Pro—the desktop computer promises significant upgrades for users, particularly in terms of performance and graphics capability. The basic M4 chip integrates a 10-core GPU paired with a 4-performance and 6-efficiency core CPU, while the M4 Pro takes it further with a 20-core GPU, a 10-performance and 4-efficiency core CPU, along with enhanced memory bandwidth surpassing its predecessors.
Notably, the M4 Pro model boasts up to 75% more memory bandwidth than the previous M3 Pro, and offers twice the bandwidth of any AI chip currently available. Both models are equipped with no less than 16GB of unified memory, with higher configurations reaching up to 64GB in systems sporting the M4 Pro chip. From a connectivity standpoint, the new Mac mini maintains ease of use with accessible front ports, including two USB-C ports and a headphone jack. The rear panel, consistent with past designs, features three Thunderbolt ports (upgraded to Thunderbolt 5 in Pro versions), Ethernet, and HDMI connections. These improvements make the desktop versatile for various professional and personal use cases, accommodating up to three 6K displays in the M4 Pro variant.
In terms of design, the Mac mini remains remarkably compact. With dimensions of approximately 5 inches (about 127mm) per side, its size has been further reduced, marking a shift back to smaller profiles while retaining a robust functionality. The exterior, constructed from significantly lower amounts of aluminum than prior models, aligns with Apple's efforts towards sustainability, contributing to the designation of this Mac mini as the company's first carbon-neutral computer. The new iteration, featured earlier on the iPad Pro, marks the debut of Apple's M4 Pro silicon into the Mac line-up. The higher price tag for models equipped with the M4 Pro, starting at $1,399, reflects the significant technological enhancements packed into this powerhouse.
Prospective buyers can pre-order the Mac mini M4 starting from October 29, with units expected to ship by November 8. The base model is priced at $599 in the US, equating to £599 in the UK and $999 in Australia, making it accessible while offering leading-edge technology for consumers and professionals alike.
