Ashton Kutcher's venture capital firm, Sound Ventures, is making significant strides in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), as confirmed during their appearance at TechCrunch Disrupt 2024. The firm, led by Kutcher alongside general partners Guy Oseary and Effie Epstein, has set its sights on innovative AI projects, including a noteworthy investment in World Labs, a startup spearheaded by AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li.

World Labs, founded by Li who is often revered as the "Godmother of AI," has rapidly gained traction within the tech community. The startup has already amassed a substantial $230 million in funding from prominent investors such as Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), New Enterprise Associates (NEA), and Radical Ventures, leading to a valuation exceeding $1 billion. The company's core aim is to create "large world models" that can effectively comprehend and interact with the three-dimensional world, with an initial focus on catering to game companies and movie studios. This venture holds personal relevance for Kutcher, given his background in Hollywood.

Sound Ventures, known for its $265 million AI fund announced last year, has invested in a variety of AI pursuits, including partnerships with major entities like OpenAI, Anthropic, Hugging Face, Stability AI, and Magic.dev. During the event, Kutcher emphasized the firm's confidence in OpenAI's prospects, revealing that they have not yet divested any of their shares in the company, indicating strong belief in its future growth.

Sound Ventures is exploring AI's potential in new physical form factors and operating systems. Oseary highlighted an interest in whether current devices and systems are optimised for AI applications, suggesting a curiosity in this evolving space.

The firm has already shown its interest in hardware innovations by engaging with companies like Humane, makers of the AI pin, and Rabbit, an AI hardware startup co-founded by Jesse Lyu. Epstein elaborated on Sound Ventures' approach, noting that while the hardware itself may not be crucial long-term, the software's ability to learn user preferences and act autonomously presents transformative potential, possibly challenging established tech giants like Apple.

Further illustrating their forward-thinking investment strategy, Sound Ventures is also considering ventures with Jony Ive, the renowned former Apple designer, collaborating with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on a new AI device. Kutcher hinted at ongoing discussions with Ive, although no official agreements have been finalised.

Kutcher concluded by expressing optimism about the potential breakthroughs in AI technology, suggesting that future developments could offer profound benefits to society. As Sound Ventures continues to expand its portfolio, its investments reflect a strategic focus on transformative technologies within the AI ecosystem.
