Negotiations between the Animation Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have resulted in an extension of the current contract until 2nd December. This extension comes amid ongoing discussions focused on establishing protective measures against the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) within the industry.
Initially set to expire on 1st November, the contract needed further deliberation as representatives from both parties could not reach a final agreement by the deadline. The discussions, which have been in progress since 12th August, are concerned with safeguarding the interests of the approximately 5,000 members of the Animation Guild, comprised of artists, writers, and technicians.
The Animation Guild, officially known as Local 839 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), has been actively negotiating to enhance terms regarding AI usage, seen as a particular threat to employment within the animation sector. This comes in the wake of IATSE's Basic Agreement, finalised in June, which addresses some of the concerns related to AI but not to the satisfaction of all members.
Under the current Basic Agreement terms, workers can request a "consultation" regarding AI implementations. Additionally, AI-generated work is prohibited from being assigned to non-union labour. A dedicated committee is also established to oversee AI-related training, with provisions for severance and retraining for those who lose employment due to AI advancements. Despite these measures, some in the association believe that the protections are insufficient, although the contract was ratified by a significant majority of 86%.
The Animation Guild is pushing for contract enhancements that include better remuneration and job security alongside AI regulations. The urgency of these talks is amplified by the high levels of unemployment currently plaguing animators, as the entertainment industry is experiencing broad contractions.
To demonstrate solidarity and draw attention to their negotiations, the Animation Guild organised a protest outside Netflix's offices in Burbank on Thursday. This public demonstration underscores the gravity with which the union views the outstanding issues, particularly regarding AI.
The contract had been previously extended past its original expiry date of 31st July, as AMPTP focused on resolving agreements with other unions, including IATSE and the Teamsters. Discussions are slated to continue in anticipation of the new December expiration date. As the negotiations progress, both the Animation Guild and AMPTP are aiming to reach a consensus that adequately addresses the unique challenges presented by AI while securing improved conditions for guild members.
