Autodesk, a global leader in design and make technology, has unveiled a groundbreaking new tool in the arena of computer-generated animation. The product, termed Wonder Animation, promises to revolutionise the way live-action scenes are transformed into 3D animated sequences. This tool, now available in beta, is an extension of Wonder Dynamics' existing software, Wonder Studio.

Wonder Animation stands out due to its innovative use of artificial intelligence to convert video footage into fully animated 3D scenes. Designed to empower artists rather than replace them, the tool allows for the seamless shooting of scenes with any camera and in any location, which can then be transformed into animated sequences featuring computer-generated characters and environments.

One of the defining features of Wonder Animation is its capacity to assist artists during the filming and editing process, even when multiple cuts and shots are involved. The AI-driven technology reconstructs the filmed scenes into a virtual 3D space, intelligently mapping camera positions and movements relative to the characters and settings depicted in the footage. This enables the creation of a comprehensive digital version of the live-action scene, including all camera angles and animations of character bodies and facial movements, ensuring that every detail is captured and editable.

Artists working with Wonder Animation can maintain full creative control by utilising their preferred software platforms, such as Maya, Blender, or Unreal Engine 5. This functionality ensures flexibility, allowing users to edit animation, character expressions, lighting, environment, and camera tracking to suit their creative vision.

Nikola Todorović, co-founder of Wonder Dynamics, addressed potential misconceptions regarding the capabilities of AI, stating, "Even though there have been tremendous advancements in AI, there is a current misconception that AI is a one-click solution – but we know that’s not the case. The launch of Wonder Animation underscores our focus on bringing the artist one step closer to producing fully animated films while ensuring they retain full creative control. Unlike the black-box approach of most current generative AI tools on the market, we’re empowering artists to shape their vision instead of just relying on automated outputs."

This development comes on the heels of Autodesk's acquisition of Wonder Dynamics in May. Autodesk has been at the forefront of integrating AI into its suite of tools, enhancing productivity with features like AI-powered Flow Generative Scheduling in Maya and Flame to expedite the creation of production schedules.

Wonder Animation's release represents a significant leap forward in the intersection of AI and creative software, providing artists with a tool that complements traditional methods rather than overshadowing them. Through this technology, Autodesk continues to cement its position as a leading innovator in animation and 3D modelling, while offering creators new means to expand their artistry and storytelling capabilities.
