Avride Unveils Revolutionary Four-Wheel Autonomous Delivery Robot with NVIDIA AI Integration
Avride, a company specialising in autonomous delivery vehicles, has unveiled a cutting-edge redesign of its delivery robots, incorporating NVIDIA's advanced AI technology. The newly developed four-wheel chassis replaces the previous six-wheel configuration, promising to enhance efficiency and performance.
Avride, which started as part of the Russian technology company Yandex's autonomous driving division, severed its ties with its Russian assets following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine and rebranded beneath the Netherlands-based Nebius Group. Now headquartered in Austin, Texas, the company has entered strategic partnerships with notable entities such as Uber.
The latest model represents a significant evolution in Avride’s engineering philosophy. The traditional six-wheel setup has been replaced by what the company describes as a "groundbreaking chassis design". This new approach aims to address previous challenges linked with excessive braking during turns, limited maneuverability, and less precise trajectory control, thereby reducing friction and tyre wear.
In the revamped design, the vehicle’s wheels are affixed to movable arms connected to a pivoting axle. This configuration allows the wheels to glide smoothly along a circular path, stabilised by the central arm. The notable omission of conventional front and rear axles in favour of mechanically connected wheel pairs enables the vehicle to adjust its turning angles simultaneously. This translates into more accurate positioning and more refined maneuvers, essential for navigating narrow pathways which require rapid directional changes.
The practical implications of this design are significant. The robot can now execute 180-degree turns almost instantaneously, a crucial feature for urban environments where nimbleness is key. Moreover, the vehicle can park on inclines more effectively by arranging its wheels in a cross pattern, which minimises the risk of losing stability on slopes. This re-engineered system has also permitted an increase in the robot’s maximum speed, with Avride noting the potential for quicker delivery times as a consequence.
The four-wheel design is not the only advancement. The robot is now equipped with the NVIDIA Jetson Orin platform, essentially an AI-equipped "brain" that endows the vehicle with capabilities commonly found in full-sized autonomous vehicles. This sophisticated integration enables the robot to process massive volumes of data from sensor arrays, including lidar and cameras, in real time, thus enhancing its navigational accuracy and safety.
As part of its comprehensive upgrade, the cargo compartment has also been overhauled. The new model features a detachable storage unit, allowing for modular adjustments depending on delivery needs. Designed to accommodate several large pizzas and drinks or multiple grocery bags, it comes with a sliding lid mechanism that secures cargo to ensure accurate delivery to the intended recipient.
