EdTech Industry Leader Highlights the Potential of AI in Student Career Development

The landscape of career education is set to transform with the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), according to Shivani Stumpf, Chief Product and Innovation Officer at PowerSchool. In a recent discussion, she presented her insights into how AI tools are poised to address the challenges faced by schools in preparing students for their future careers.

Stumpf highlights a worrying statistic: only 13% of students feel adequately prepared to choose their career paths after high school, as shown in a survey by the ECMC Group. This situation is exacerbated by the high caseloads of school counsellors, who juggle a multitude of responsibilities, leaving little time for individualised career guidance. Many school counsellors are responsible for over 400 students each, making it challenging to provide dedicated support for each student's unique post-secondary needs.

To bridge this gap, Stumpf suggests the integration of generative AI assistants, which can help students make informed career decisions suited to their personal circumstances. These AI tools, built following Responsible AI guidelines, can offer tailored advice and relieve some of the burden on counsellors, enabling them to focus on areas requiring high-impact intervention such as behavioural and mental health support.

The educational journey can be shaped as early as primary school by introducing career literacy through age-appropriate AI tools. Interactive, play-based assessments can help younger students discover interests and academic connections to potential careers, fostering engagement and dismantling self-imposed limitations. Similarly, the incorporation of career-related content in classroom activities can enhance students' understanding of the benefits their education can bring to their future professional lives.

For older students, particularly those in middle and high school, AI can facilitate exploration of a wide range of career paths and work-based learning opportunities, such as internships and career fairs. Personalised AI assistants can provide students with crucial insights into various careers, including job responsibilities, salary expectations, demand, and educational requirements. This allows students to be proactive in charting their career pathways, which includes applying for financial aid and pinpointing scholarships matching their interests and achievements.

An example of such an AI application is PowerBuddy—a generative AI assistant integrated within the college and career readiness platform Naviance. PowerBuddy aids students in developing personalised plans based on factors such as GPA, career interests, and personal goals, offering a detailed roadmap to their ideal careers and the steps needed to reach them.

Moreover, the application of AI extends beyond student support to improving access for parents and guardians, who play a significant role in guiding post-secondary decisions. AI tools can provide these stakeholders with essential information about school schedules, policies, and opportunities, significantly reducing the time and effort typically spent navigating these resources. Importantly, AI’s ability to operate in multiple languages ensures equitable access for all families, particularly benefiting those where English might not be the primary language spoken at home.

The impact of such technologies is already being recognised as significant, with a 2024 Education Focus Report indicating increased belief among district leaders in AI's potential to enhance teaching and learning. This sentiment has grown from 53% in 2023 to 70% in 2024, reflecting a broader confidence in AI’s role in educational settings.

Stumpf posits that AI, when responsibly developed and implemented, is not merely a supplementary tool but a fundamental component in advancing educational outcomes and engagement. As more schools embrace the capabilities of AI, the potential for these technologies to inspire students and improve their educational journeys becomes ever more tangible.
