Elon Musk Warns of AI Risks Amid Ambitious Fundraising for xAI

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia—Elon Musk, the technology entrepreneur known for his forward-thinking ventures, has reiterated warnings about the potential risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI) even as he pursues substantial investment in his AI company, xAI. Speaking at the Future Investment Initiative summit in Saudi Arabia’s capital, Musk addressed both the promise and hazards of AI technology.

During the summit, Musk expressed his belief in the transformative potential of AI, noting that it is likely to be beneficial overall. However, he raised concerns about the approximately 10-20% chance of adverse outcomes, acknowledging that while low, the probability is not insignificant. These potential risks could become more pronounced if AI development accelerates at the pace Musk anticipates.

Musk boldly predicted a dramatic leap in AI capabilities, forecasting a tenfold improvement within a year. He further envisaged that AI could achieve parity with human abilities within a couple of years and possibly surpass the combined cognitive capabilities of the entire human population shortly thereafter.

Concurrently, reports have surfaced regarding xAI's funding efforts, with the company actively seeking investment that could elevate its valuation to $40 billion. The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed sources, disclosed that xAI already secured $6 billion earlier this year, when it was valued at $24 billion. The firm is known for developing the Grok AI chatbot, available to premium subscribers of X, Musk’s rebranded social media platform.

This ambitious trajectory isn't new for Musk. He co-founded OpenAI in 2015, a key player in the AI space known for creating ChatGPT. However, Musk parted ways with OpenAI in 2018 due to divergent views with his co-founders and a desire to explore AI ventures within Tesla. OpenAI has since grown to become one of the world's most valuable private companies, with a valuation of $157 billion following its latest funding round.

Musk's discussion of AI at the summit wasn't limited to immediate technological advancements. Looking further ahead, he projected that humanoid robots could outnumber humans by 2040. Tesla, one of Musk's companies, showcased an updated version of its Optimus robot earlier in October; however, this model still necessitates human oversight, lacking full AI autonomy.

Despite his reputation for being "pathologically optimistic" and frequent scrutiny over unmet timelines for projects at Tesla, Musk maintains a cautious perspective regarding AI. He referenced AI's existential threats earlier this year, echoing sentiments shared by notable figures such as Geoffrey Hinton, a Nobel laureate who highlighted similar concerns about technology's perilous potential.

Musk emphasized the importance of vigilance concerning AI's development, stating, “I think AI is a significant existential threat and something we should be paying close attention to.” His statements at the Riyadh summit reinforce ongoing dialogues in tech circles about balancing AI's rapid advancement with ethical and safety considerations.
