In an era of rapid technological transformation, the creative arts are increasingly intersecting with the realms of artificial intelligence (AI), as exemplified by an innovative dance production launching this week. Aoi Nakamura and Esteban Lecoq, the choreographers from the collective AΦE, are unveiling Lilith.Aeon, highlighted as the world’s first AI-driven dance production. Unlike traditional performances reliant on human dancers, Lilith, an AI-created performer, will take centre stage. The performance will unfold on an LED cube, with the audience's movement around it influencing Lilith's dance.

The show complements Nakamura and Lecoq's ongoing exploration of immersive theatrical experiences, having previously delved into virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). Their latest venture bridges their passion for storytelling with transhumanism—a concept involving the use of technology to transcend human limitations. Initially conceptualised as a script by an AI bot, Lilith.Aeon results from an intricate collaboration, where Nakamura and Lecoq provided a wealth of research to the AI, which in turn co-created the performance. Although Lilith is capable of generating new choreography, Nakamura and Lecoq ensured the output aligned with their artistic aesthetic.

Wayne McGregor, a notable figure in integrating technology with dance, has been a pioneer in exploring AI's potential for over two decades. He developed AISOMA with Google, an AI-based choreographic tool that analyses an extensive archive of his work. AISOMA is capable of offering real-time choreographic suggestions, akin to the spontaneity a dancer brings during improvisation. This cutting-edge technology allows each iteration of McGregor's 2017 piece, Autobiography, to differ, demonstrating the AI's creative variability. McGregor’s next project, On the Other Earth, developed alongside Professor Jeffrey Shaw in Hong Kong, promises further innovation through interactive 360-degree screens.

Alexander Whitley, another prominent choreographer, is also leveraging AI to enhance audience engagement. His VR rendition of The Rite of Spring uses audience movements to influence digital avatars, making simpler inputs appear more graceful and synchronised with the soundtrack, similar to Auto-Tune's effect in music. This democratises the dance experience further.

The rapid development of AI and motion capture technology, driven substantially by the gaming industry, has made previously advanced capabilities accessible through simple smartphone applications. Nonetheless, the burgeoning reliance on AI raises concerns about artistic integrity and intellectual property. In particular, conversations around rights and royalties for dancer movements utilised to train AI are gaining attention. Historically, motion capture contracts involved broad rights buyouts, a practice reconsidered today as technology’s future application becomes clearer.

Efforts are underway to address these issues, with Qudus Onikeku, a Nigerian choreographer, exploring the use of AI to recognise and safeguard dance movements, specifically to protect intellectual property for traditionally underrepresented Black artists. Additionally, collaborations with corporations such as Nvidia, Amazon, and Dell are common, providing artists with technology access, while companies gain creative influence and valuable data.

While AI heralds exciting possibilities, there are challenges to overcome. The potential homogenisation of creative output due to shared training data remains a concern, as noted by Jonzi D. However, when innovators, such as AΦE, chart their own technological course, creativity finds new paths.

Despite advancements enabling AI-centric dance forms, the primacy of live performance retains its irreplaceable allure. McGregor and others acknowledge the untouchable complexity and authenticity of the human body in dance. Even with AI interventions, the tangible presence of human performers instils depth and meaning that pure digital experiences cannot replicate.

Ultimately, while technology may offer new techniques and perspectives, iconic elements of live dance will persist, a sentiment echoed by Nakamura: "Live performance never can be replaced by the digital experience." Meanwhile, Lecoq maintains a balance, reminding us of the simplicity and utility found in everyday technology.
