A recent analysis powered by artificial intelligence suggests Vice President Kamala Harris could be on a narrow path to victory in the upcoming 2024 U.S. Presidential Election against her Republican rival, former President Donald Trump. According to the assessment developed by ChatGPT, an AI language model from OpenAI, Harris is projected to garner 276 Electoral College votes, surpassing Trump's 262.
This forecast was commissioned by British betting company Bonus Code Bets, which has utilised ChatGPT to evaluate which candidate is likely to win each U.S. state. The AI factored in publicly available polling data, demographic information, and historical election results to make its predictions. The AI analysis anticipates that Harris will secure key swing states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Nevada but will fall short in Arizona, Georgia, and North Carolina.
Despite these projections, recent polling, such as that from FiveThirtyEight, still shows the race as highly competitive. Their model indicates Harris holds a slim 1.4 point lead, with 48.1% of the vote compared to Trump's 46.7%. Yet, due to the complexity of the U.S. Electoral College system, winning the popular vote does not guarantee the presidency. FiveThirtyEight's calculations also suggest Trump has a 52% chance of emerging victorious overall, while Harris’s chances stand at 48%.
Bonus Code Bets’ analysis emphasizes the significance of urban centers in Pennsylvania and Michigan. The AI suggests that Harris could leverage Democratic support in cities such as Detroit and Ann Arbor, as well as Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, to offset Trump's influence in more rural regions.
This analysis emerges amidst a background of ongoing campaign controversies. President Joe Biden recently found himself in hot water after allegedly describing Trump supporters using derogatory terminology during a virtual call. This remark followed comedian Tony Hinchcliffe's controversial statements at a Trump rally in New York, where he disparaged Puerto Rico.
Betting odds have shifted slightly in Trump's favour, with bookmakers like Bet365 and Paddy Power adjusting their predictions following these developments. Nevertheless, national polls reflect a deadlock, with significant support for both candidates in crucial battleground states. A particular Democratic advantage highlighted by recent polling is increased support among Black men under 50 for Harris.
The seven pivotal battleground states are currently too close to call, with neither candidate having a definitive lead beyond the statistical margin of error. The importance of swing voters continues to mount, with issues such as the economy, healthcare, and democracy protection atop their list of priorities.
Demographically, Trump's support remains strong among white and male voters, while Harris finds backing primarily among women and non-white populations. This electoral clash is set against the backdrop of broader social divides, as exemplified by recent polls showing considerable sections of the electorate doubting whether Trump would accept an unfavourable election outcome.
As November approaches, questions remain about voter engagement levels, particularly among younger demographics, who historically show lower turnout rates. Nonetheless, the picture suggests a more mobilized electorate compared to the 2020 presidential cycle.
The AI-driven analysis and shifting political dynamics underscore the anticipation of one of the tightest elections in recent U.S. history, setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown between Harris and Trump.
