KKR and Energy Capital Partners (ECP) have announced a significant strategic partnership, launching an ambitious $50 billion initiative aimed at expanding AI-driven data centres and power infrastructure on a global scale. This collaboration comes at a critical juncture as the demand for such infrastructure is projected to soar, driven by rapid advancements in artificial intelligence and cloud computing technologies.
The partnership seeks to respond to forecasts indicating that by 2030, investments required in data centres and power generation could surpass the $1 trillion mark, necessitating large-scale and sustainable developments. The need for reliable power to support these data centres is underscored by predictions of a 160% increase in data centre power demand by 2030, according to Joe Bae, Co-Chief Executive Officer at KKR. Bae highlighted the importance of establishing robust infrastructure to enhance productivity and maintain a competitive edge in AI for different nations, all while being conscious of affordability, reliability, and sustainability.
KKR and ECP's alliance aims to blend KKR’s vast expertise in digital infrastructure with ECP’s leadership in power generation and energy transition. This partnership promises to deliver scalable infrastructure solutions designed to meet the needs of technology companies and end consumers alike. Doug Kimmelman, Founder and Senior Partner at ECP, highlighted the urgency of developing power infrastructure that addresses both cost and environmental concerns, which is crucial for the U.S. to remain at the forefront of AI technology.
The United States is anticipated to experience a tripling of its data centre demand by 2030, correlating with the increase in AI and cloud computing applications. This exponential growth will require substantial capital investment, with single data centre campuses potentially necessitating more than 1 gigawatt of power and over $15 billion for necessary infrastructure and equipment.
To achieve their objectives, KKR and ECP intend to collaborate intensively with utilities, developers, and independent power producers. They plan to expedite the deployment of data centre and power infrastructure worldwide, leveraging over 8 gigawatts of existing data centre pipeline and 100 gigawatts of power generation assets. This places the partnership in a commanding position to deliver essential infrastructure swiftly and sustainably.
The strategic partnership between KKR and ECP is set to serve as a significant pillar in supporting AI and cloud infrastructure projects, accommodating the vast energy requirements these technologies entail. The progress made through this $50 billion initiative could offer competitive advantages to various stakeholders across the tech and energy sectors, promising a more sustainable and powerful infrastructure network to meet future demands.
